POLYSHIELD 400 is a highly effective scale inhibitor developed for reverse osmosis (RO) systems.
Scaling and iron fouling of the RO membranes will reduce system performance and lead to premature
membrane replacement. Precipitation of scale and deposits build up on the RO membrane which
leads to poor permeate quality, low permeate production, unscheduled downtime, increased water
consumption and increased energy costs.

POLYSHIELD 400 is a proven performer against the following scalants: calcium carbonate, calcium
sulphate, barium sulphate, strontium sulphate, calcium fluoride, silica and iron.

POLYSHIELD 400 reduces the risk of scaling and eliminates the use of hazardous acids, resulting
in efficient plant operation with the highest possible conversion rate. It is therefore a more cost-
effective alternative for membrane protection than pH control or ion exchange softening.

POLYSHIELD 400 is a super-threshold agent able to stabilise a wide range of supersaturated salt
solutions, thereby preventing precipitation on the membrane surface. This property allows engineers
to design RO systems to successfully operate at higher recoveries than systems that do not utilise this
technology. Equipment manufacturers that design systems to operate at higher recoveries have a
significant advantage over their competitors because they can offer the end user benefits such as:

* Better environmental acceptance of concentrate discharge.

Application and Dosage

POLYSHIELD 400 is dosed continuously into the feedwater prior to the membrane systems at typical
dose rates of 3-6 mg/L depending on water chemistry and system conditions. It is recommended to
operate the dosing pump with the highest possible frequency and to adjust the dosage by adjusting
the pump stroke to ensure membrane protection. POLYSHIELD 400 can be diluted using RO
permeate but a fresh solution should be made every 3-5 days. For specific details of applications
contact your FEEDWATER representative.

Safety and Handling Precautions

Normal Use Scale and corrosion control in open recirculating cooling systems. IRRITANT
Resin cleaning agent.

Fire/Explosion Risks Not Flammable. If heated to temperatures 200°C, decomposition occurs and phosphine
is released.

Health Hazards

Mild irritant to eyes and skin.

First Aid

Skin Exposure: Wash affected area with plenty of water, remove contaminated clothing.
If irritation develops, seek medical attention.

Eye Exposure: Irrigate with flowing water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical advice.

Ingestion: Wash out mouth with water and give plenty of water to drink. DO NOT induce vomiting.
Seek medical attention.

Storage
Keep container tightly closed and in a cool place

Handling
Avoid contact with skin or eyes.
In the case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water.
Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye protection.

Spillage
Flush spillage with water and wash to waste diluting greatly with water.

Disposal
Wash out empty container thoroughly with water before disposal.
