Artist study——《The Card Players》

Paul·Cezanne 1893 134cm*181cm

 Card Player is an 1890 figure painting by Paul Cezanne, a

post-Impressionist work using material pastels and canvas. He used

to draw many series of pictures on one subject, and this is the same

thing, he managed to draw five pictures on the theme of poker.

Probably completed in 1893, this is the third of five paintings and a

stylistic shift.

 In the painting, two men are sitting opposite each other at a small

table, on which there is nothing but a bottle of wine. The man on

the left is dressed in purple and blue, with a hat and a pipe in his

mouth, while the man on the right is dressed in yellow-green and

also wearing a hat. Judging by the costumes, these are two farmers,

playing poker in a cafe (based

on Cezanne's background), but

the author does not describe

the cards in much detail. The

most curious thing about the

whole painting is that the two

men in Cezanne's painting are expressionless, as if in the midst of a

poker game. The picture behind them is very blurry, and the author

uses only simple geometric lines to draw cabinets and a few

decorations.

 In terms of color, the bright white highlights in this painting seem

to divide the composition into two parts, divided diagonally, with

warm tones on the left looking darker and cool tones on the right

looking brighter. This drew attention to the dark and light tones of

men's clothing. Cezanne believed that "there are no lines, no light

and shade, only contrast between colors. The volume of the image is

expressed by the exact interrelation of the tones ". Everything near

and far in the painting is made up of blocks of color. Cezanne

replaced "shape" with "tonal change," in which a change in the

gamut enhances the shape of the image. The structure of the

shadows throughout the painting, not by changing the brightness,

but by changing the saturation, is what makes Cezanne special.

 Structurally, two heads sitting opposite each other fill the frame. A

wine bottle is placed in the middle of the table. The wine bottle is

the central axis of the painting, dividing the painting into two parts,

thus highlighting the rivalry between the two opponents facing each

other at the card table. The arms of the two figures extend from the

bottle to the sides, forming a "W" shape and connecting to two

vertical bodies. The composition looks more stable and harmonious.

But on closer inspection, the position of the table is not coordinated

throughout the picture. It is not horizontal, breaking with tradition.

Through understanding and learning,

we know that the role of slanted

composition is movement, impact, and

the sense of depth. According to my

study and analysis, I think it is the

latter. The author wants to tilt the originally horizontal straight

picture through perspective so as to highlight the spatial effect of

the picture.

 Light. Light may not be very prominent in this painting, but it is

the finishing touch. Cezanne restored the natural world to his own

pure picture in his works. His works always give people a sense of

shock and awe, which comes from the element of light. Cezanne
believed that "all things in time, birth, old age, illness and death,

and the occurrence and development of all natural phenomena

depend on the existence of light and change and development." In

this painting, for example, the light comes from the bottom left

corner, causing the left side to be dark and the right side to be

bright, and the bright light on the bottle gives the bottle a

three-dimensional feeling. This lighting makes the picture more

realistic and gives it a sense of life.

 Through the research, I found that the works of Cezanne let a

person feel a kind of peaceful atmosphere at the first glance, can

make people sink down and reflection and thinking. Many details in

the picture, before we know the author's background and creative

ideas, will make people very confused, produce a lot of imagination.

When it comes to myself, most of the time I will be afraid of

affecting others and forced to cover up myself, but as time goes by,

it will become a habit, sometimes angry, sad simply let people not

notice. The way to vent emotions is to draw or sleep, but most of

the time when painting will be very invested in themselves, but will

lose themselves, always want to draw perfect, but lose their own

characteristics and the meaning and characteristics of the material

itself. That's what I learned from Cezanne. Second, Cezanne has a

unique expression of color, let people immediately recognize the

work of Cezanne, because Cezanne in the expression of the

structure of the character by changing the color saturation and hue

formed. Thirdly, the description of scenery in his works is very

simple and full of geometric meaning. He is good at exploiting his

strengths and circumvent his weaknesses, giving full play to his

unique talents.

 Cezanne had a unique view on the expression of emotions and other

artists. "Cezanne's life was a lonely one." However, his loneliness is

not what we think. His loneliness comes from his persistent pursuit

and not giving up. In his life, he suffers a lot of conflicts and

disharmony, so that he cannot get rid of anxiety. Cezanne's works,

through overlapping colors and simple structures, convey to the

public the emotions of simplicity, reality, but also rich in reason

and anxiety. His work is not a single emotion, but a stillness

through hard, solid structures, and endless anxiety. That's what I

learned from him, and that's what I feel I can improve emotionally

in my paintings. A lot of artists have an emotional connection in

their work, but Cezanne's emotional expression is the most unique

and the most profound I think.

 Artist contrast
This painting is George de la Tour's "The Cheater at Cards."

 First of all, analyze from the content. In this painting, the

protagonists are three card players and a maid holding wine bottles

and eight-tenths full of wine around the table. The difference is that

there are more coins on the table and people are more gorgeously

dressed. It is not difficult to find the

characters.they have a lot of small

expressions, a closer look will find that the deception is the three on

the left, and the right is the lonely deceiver. Their

expressions are subtle. I think the most alluring

things in this painting are the women, the gambling

and the wine.

We can also find that they have all kinds of little actions to make the

content more lively.

 This is followed by light. The light in this painting is much brighter

than Cezanne's, and it gives individuals a different sense of vision,

but it also gives them a sense of their environment and their

identities. The combination of light and shadow, absent from

Cezanne's paintings, accentuates their actions.

 Then there is structure. The structure of the figure in this painting

is triangular, and the movements of each person can be clearly seen,

and it is compact. The triangle is stable, so people's intuitive feeling

is stable, and the picture is full, but there are more characters, more

complex expressions, will make people feel more chaotic, but also

reveal a lively atmosphere.

 I think the expression of emotion in this painting is more direct, a

lot of mental activity and small movements. Cezanne's is more

ordinary. All the emotion is in the details and needs to be analyzed.
