How is statistics used in aviation?
Statistical data are compiled by airlines, airports and civil aviation authorities applying international
standards. Aviation statistics are widely used throughout the industry, ranging from monitoring
global industry performance to detailed network planning and competitor benchmarking.
U.S. airlines carried 194 million more passengers in 2022 than in 2021, up 30% year-to-year. For the
full year 2022, January through December, U.S. airlines carried 853 million passengers (unadjusted),
up from 658 million in 2021 and 388 million in 2020.

Why is aviation statistics important?
In today's rapidly changing aviation industry, accessing accurate statistical data is essential for making
clear, data-backed choices for organizations. For over 60 years, WATS has been the trusted source for
the aviation industry, providing the most accurate statistical resource available.
Safety analysis: Statistics are used to analyze data related to aviation accidents and incidents, in order to
identify trends and patterns that may indicate potential safety issues. This information is then used to
develop safety initiatives and improve safety practices in the aviation industry.
Data can be used to improve the fuel efficiency of aircraft and operations and can be used to reduce
the environmental impact of aviation, such as noise pollution and CO2 emissions. Data is also critical in
providing executives with the business intelligence they need to make informed decisions.

What is aviation data analysis?
Aviation data analysts help airlines optimize routes, enhance safety measures, improve operational
efficiency, and enhance customer experiences. They also assist airports in managing passenger flow,
improving security protocols, and optimizing resource allocation.
5
How is data science useful in air route planning?
Data science and machine learning are used to evaluate passenger demand across different
routes, optimize aircraft ground handling and fueling, or redefine passengers' airport
experiences with biometric boarding with new distribution technologies.
It is possible for aviation businesses to streamline their flight planning, crew scheduling,
maintenance tracking, aircraft dispatch, and other processes. AI could monitor aircraft systems in
real-time and detect anomalies that could indicate a problem. This could help prevent accidents
and reduce maintenance costs
