Read the passage carefully, and then answer all the questions that follow
1. What two (2) things attracted the narrator’s attention when he arrived at the coast?
(2mks). Two things that attracted the narrator’s attention were the sea and a slave ship
riding in it.

2. Point out two things about the men that were different from what the narrator was
accustomed to? (2mks). Two things about the men that were different from what the
narrator was accustomed to are their white complexion and their strange language in
which they used to communicate with each other.

3. What was done to the narrator on the ship? (2mks). The narrator was carefully examined
by the white men to see if he was healthy. He was also man- handled and tossed up onto
the ship without any consideration for safety.

4. The narrator saw some black men “receiving their pay’. What does this suggest? (3mks).
This suggest that the black men that brought him on board the ship were contracted or
hired by the white men to capture and sell black men like himself into slavery. This was a
kind of business arrangement.

5. State two things that made the narrator think that the strange men were spirits? (2mks).
Two things that made the narrator think the men were spirits is when there was a cloth
put upon the masts by the help of ropes, and then the vessel went out and when the white
men had some spell or magic, they put in the water when they liked in order to stop the
vessel.

6. What evidence is there in the story which suggests that the narrator is a child? (2mks)
Evidence that shows that the narrator is a child is when the narrator asked if we were not
to be eaten by those white men with horrible looks, red faces, and long hair.

7. Cite two examples of visual images presented in the story. (2mks): The sea and the slave
