Question 1. Answer the following questions regarding rational inequalities:


a) What is a rational inequality?
A rational inequality is an inequality that involves fractions with algebraic expressions
(polynomials) in the numerator and denominator.

b) How do you solve a rational inequality?


Finding the interval determining values (x-intercepts and vertical asymptotes, if present) and set
up an interval chart. Based on the signs in the intervals, determine the solution to the rational
inequality which depends on the inequality symbol:
< - Less than
> - Greater than
≤ - Less than or equal to
≥ - Greater than or equal to
You pick the intervals that suits the functions needs (If it requires less than zero, pick the
intervals that are negative)
c) How is the solution to a rational inequality different from a solution to a rational equation?
The solution to a rational inequality is a range of values (intervals) that satisfy the inequality,
while the solution to a rational equation is the specific value(s) that make the equation true.
