CH 7 Concentrating Colector
CH 7 Concentrating Colector
Concentrating Collectors
7.1 Introduction
a) The concentrator (reflector): which is the optical system that directs the solar
radiation onto the receiver surface.
b) The receiver: which receives the reflected solar radiation from the concentrator
and converts it to useful heat gain. The receiver includes the absorber, its associated
covers and the insulation. The absorber is usually covered with glass and the gap
between the absorber and glass is sometimes evacuated to minimize thermal losses
to environment.
The solar concentrating collectors have two advantages over the flat−plate solar
collectors:
a) They can produce higher temperatures than in flat−plate collector because the
solar flux is concentrated on a small receiving area.
b) The thermal losses from the absorber is significantly decreased due to the
decreased absorber area.
50
Imaging linear and point concentrating collectors: in this category the collector
must track the movement of the sun so that the reflected radiation is focused on a
small receiving are with one reflection process. This category produce higher
temperatures than in the nonimaging type.

Fig. (7.1): Two types of concentrating collectors: (a) Non−imaging. (b) Imaging.
It is the angle through which the solar radiation entering the concentrating collector
can eventually reach the absorber even after several reflections.

7.3 Concentration Ratio (C)
It is defined as the ratio of the aperture area Aa to the receiver area Ar Fig. (7.2):
𝐴𝑎
𝐶= 7.1
𝐴𝑟
𝑄𝑢 = 𝜌𝜏𝛼𝐼𝑇 𝐴𝑎 − 𝐴𝑟 𝑈𝐿 𝑇𝑝𝑚 − 𝑇𝑎
𝐴𝑟
𝑄𝑢 = 𝐴𝑎 𝜌𝜏𝛼𝐼𝑇 − 𝑈𝐿 𝑇𝑝𝑚 − 𝑇𝑎
𝐴𝑎
𝑈𝐿
𝑄𝑢 = 𝐴𝑎 𝜌𝜏𝛼𝐼𝑇 − 𝑇𝑝𝑚 − 𝑇𝑎 7.2
𝐶
Equation 7.2 can be written in terms of heat removal factor FR and working fluid
inlet temperature Tfi as follows:
𝑈𝐿
𝑄𝑢 = 𝐴𝑎 𝐹𝑅 𝜌𝜏𝛼𝐼𝑇 − 𝑇𝑓𝑖 − 𝑇𝑎 7.3
𝐶
Where ρ are the reflectance coefficient of the reflecting surface and τα is the
transmittance−absorptance product of the absorber.
The heat removal factor FR has the same form of that of flat plate collectors:
−A r U L F
m c pf m c pf
FR = 1−e 7.4
Ar UL
An expression for the collector efficiency factor (F) can be derived from its definition
as the ratio of thermal resistance between the absorber and the atmosphere to
thermal resistance between the working fluid and the atmosphere:
1
𝐴𝑟𝑈𝐿
𝐹= 1 7.5
𝐴𝑟𝑈𝐿
+𝑅𝑓
52
Where Rf represents thermal resistance between the working fluid and the absorber
pipe wall:
𝐷
1 𝑙𝑛 𝐷𝑜
𝑖
𝑅𝑓 = + 7.6
ℎ 𝑓𝑖 𝜋𝐷𝑖 𝐿 2𝜋𝑘𝐿
Where L is the absorber pipe length and hfi is the convection heat transfer
coefficient inside the pipe. Substituting eq. 7.6 in eq. 7.5 and rearranging:
1
𝑈𝐿
𝐹= 𝐷 7.7
𝐷 𝑜 𝑙𝑛 𝐷𝑜
1 𝐷𝑜 𝑖
+ +
𝑈 𝐿 ℎ 𝑓𝑖 𝐷 𝑖 2𝑘
The overall heat loss coefficient UL can be found by the same procedure followed in
the flat plate solar collector taking into account that the convection losses from the
absorber can be neglected if the space surrounding the absorber is evacuated.
Accordingly the losses are only due to radiation:

𝐴 𝑟 𝜍 𝑇𝑝𝑚 𝑐
𝑞𝑝𝑟 = 1 𝐷𝑜 1 Glass Cover
+ −1
𝜖 𝑝 𝐷 𝑐𝑖 𝜖 𝑐
2 +𝑇 2
Do
𝐴 𝑟 𝜍 𝑇𝑝𝑚 +𝑇𝑐 𝑇𝑝𝑚 𝑐
𝑞𝑝𝑟 = 𝑇𝑝𝑚 − 𝑇𝑐 1 𝐷𝑜 1 `
+ −1 Dci
𝜖𝑝 𝐷𝑖 𝜖𝑐
𝑇𝑝𝑚 −𝑇𝑐
𝑞𝑝𝑟 = 7.8
𝑅𝑝𝑐
Where Rpc is the thermal resistance between the absorber and the glass cover:
1 𝐷𝑜 1
+ −1
𝜖𝑝 𝐷𝑖 𝜖𝑐
𝑅𝑝𝑐 = 𝐴 2 7.9
𝑟𝜍 𝑇𝑝𝑚 +𝑇𝑐 𝑇𝑝𝑚 +𝑇𝑐2
The radiation thermal losses from the glass cover to the environment is:
And the convection thermal losses from the glass cover to environment is:
𝑞𝑐𝑐 = 𝐴𝑐 ℎ𝑤 𝑇𝑐 − 𝑇𝑎
53
So the total loss is the sum of radiation and convection losses:
𝜖𝑐 𝐴𝑐 𝜍 𝑇𝑐4 − 𝑇𝑠4
𝑞𝑐𝑡 = 𝑇𝑐 − 𝑇𝑎 𝐴𝑐 ℎ𝑤 +
𝑇𝑐 − 𝑇𝑎
𝑇𝑐 −𝑇𝑎
𝑞𝑐𝑡 = 7.10
𝑅𝑐𝑎
Where R2 is the thermal resistance from the glass cover to the environment:
1
𝑅𝑐𝑎 = 𝜖 𝐴 𝜍 𝑇4 4 7.11
𝑐 −𝑇 𝑠
𝐴𝑐 ℎ 𝑤 + 𝑐 𝑐
𝑇 𝑐 −𝑇 𝑎
𝑇𝑐 = 𝑞𝑡 𝑅𝑐𝑎 + 𝑇𝑎 7.13
Substitute Tc from eq. 7.13 in eq. 7.8 and using eq. 7.12:
𝑇𝑝𝑚 −𝑇𝑎
𝑞𝑡 = = 𝐴𝑟 𝑈𝐿 𝑇𝑝𝑚 − 𝑇𝑎 7.14
𝑅𝑝𝑐 +𝑅𝑐𝑎
Combining eqs. 7.13 and 7.14 to evaluate the new cover temperature Tc,new :
Accordingly the overall heat loss coefficient of the concentrating collector is:
1
𝑈𝐿 = 𝐴 7.16
𝑟 𝑅𝑝𝑐 +𝑅𝑐𝑎
