ASSIGNMENT ON MARINE OPERATION AND COASTAL ENGINEERING (MAE 382)

BY

AK18/ENG/MAE027

MARINE ENGINEERING/NAVAL ARCHITECTURE

SUBMITTED TO

PROF. EMMANUEL ANTAI.

17TH JANUARY 2022.

ASSIGNMENT

1) WHY IS THAT IN THE MARINE INDUSTRY THE DEMAND FOR CLEAN WATER AND WATER TREATMENT
WILL CONTINUE TO GAIN IMPORTANCE
Fresh water on board ship is used for a variety of purposes, for domestic uses such as drinking,
washing, recreational purposes (swimming pools and water slides) to ship operation purposes
such as machinery cooling, cleaning, steam generation, sprinkler, fire fighting.
Water treatment is also of great importance to remove harmful chemicals and bacteria from the
water gotten directly from the sea or river, while the ship is sailing through. All this are needed
because thousand of guests or crews onboard need the water and to prevent any disease and
general ill-health.

2) WATER TREATMENT PROCESSES AVAILABLE ON A CRUISE SHIP AND CARGO VESSEL

STEAM EVAPORATION: Essentially turning salt water into distilled water.
REVERSE OSMOSIS: Is a common method of producing fresh water from sewage onboard ships.
Desalination/ Filtration water treatment.
Sand filters.
Treatment of water with chlorine dioxide to get rid of bacteria such as Legionella which is ever
present in seawater

3) MEASURES PUT IN PLACE IN THE INDUSTRY TO ENSURE GOOD WATER QUALITY BOTH FOR MARINE
ENVIRONMENT AND USE ONBOARD VESSELS
Water safety and quality are fundamental to crew members and passengers onboard. Considering
that water storage and distribution systems on ship are complex and could provide conditions for
bacterial contamination.
They include;
 Water production should be checked at all times. Older pipes in disrepair may contain lead,
but by keeping plumbing in good order, you may reduce your chance of lead in your water.
 Corrosion in plumbing should be checked at all times. Older pipes in disrepair may contain
lead in your water.
 Samplings should be performed on the ship’s water distribution system (water supply lines)
and storage systems (Tanks) and any other connection for portable water that is loaded on
board.
 Water testing should be done to ensure drinking and recreational water quality standards
are met for crews, passengers and visitors.

4) SOLUTIONS AVAILABLE FOR MARINE INDUSTRY WATER AND WASTE TREATMENT

A sewage treatment plant is used to treat marine industry waste, black water and gray water for
ocean going vessels. After treatment the waste water is allowed to be discharged or thrown
overboard, this being done reduces the risk of pollution in the ocean which may affects marine life.
