Module on Prepare Tools and Materials for Fabricating Formworks!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher
or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

What I Need to Know

In this module you will learn more about preparing tools and materials for
fabricating formworks. It is here to help you understand more about carpentry. The
scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.

The module has one lesson:

Lesson PREPARE TOOLS AND
1 MATERIALS FOR
FABRICATING FORMWORKS

In this module, you will learn to prepare a list of electrical tools and materials for a
specific job in Carpentry. With this, it is necessary that you learn the different
materials and tools needed in Carpentry. You will be introduced also to the
appropriate use of PPE. In addition, you are introduced to construction company
rules and regulations.

What’s In

This portion of the module is about some topics for you to review. As a TLE student,
you are recommended to review your topics. Reviewing will help you a lot to gain
better understanding on the concepts presented throughout your journey in learning
Carpentry.

Notes to the Teacher

Teacher is recommended to design an activity to recognize
prior learning of the students or you may have some
motivational activities to incorporate at the start of this
module.

What’s New

Directions:

Identify the tools and materials for fabricating form works. Copy and answer
this in your activity notebook.
1. It is a small hard metal blade which is used to cut the rock surfaces
with the help of sledge.
2. It is used to dig the soil for foundation trenched etc. It contains metal
plate at the end of long wooden handle.
3. It is used to level the excavated ground.
4. It is used to excavate the soil. It is more suitable for hard soil which is
quite difficult to dig with spade of hoe.
5. It consists a thread whose ends are connected with two solid metal rods
with pin points. It is used to level the alignment of brick course while
brick laying.

What Is It

Tools and Materials for Fabricating Formworks

1. Bolster – like chisel but it is used to cut

bricks. Its cutting edge is wider than the
width of brick. It is useful for accurate
cutting of bricks.

2. Brick Hammer – is used to cut the bricks and

also used to push the bricks if they come out
of the course line.

4
3. Chisel – generally used in wood work and this
must be useful to remove the concrete bumps or
excess concrete in hardened surface.

4. Crowbar – used for digging the ground

and to remove the roots or trees in the
ground, nails etc.

5. Digging bar – solid metal rod with pin shape

at the bottom. It is also used to dig the hard
surfaces of ground.

6. Drill machine – used to make holes

in the walls, slabs, doors, window
frames etc.

7. End Frames – similar to line and pins.

But instead of pins, L shaped frames are
used at the end of thread which hold the
brick work effectively and level the
alignment accurately.

8. Gloves – required to prevent the hands

from direct contact with the cement,
paints etc. and to avoid injury while
using machines, tools etc.

5
9. Hand Saw – used to cut the
wood materials like doors,
windows, slab panels etc.

10. Hoe – also used to excavate the soil but in this

case the metal plate is provided with acute angle
to the wooden handle.

11. Jack Plane – used in the wood work to

smoothen the surface of doors and windows
etc.

12. Ladder – also required in construction works. To

check slab work, to transport material to the higher
floors, to paint the walls etc.

13. Line and Pins – consists a thread whose

ends are connected with two solid metal
rods with pin points. It is used to level the
alignment of brick course while brick
laying.

14. Mason’s Square – used to achieve

perfect right angle at the corner of
masonry wall. It is “L” shape. First course is
laid properly using Mason’s square then
base on the first, remaining layers of
bricks are set out.

6
15. Measuring Tape – used to check the
thickness, length, widths of masonry walls,
foundation beds, excavated beds, excavated
trenches etc.

16. Measuring Wheel – used to measure the

distances or lengths. It contains a wheel of
known diameter, which record the no. of
complete revolutions from which the
distance can be measured. It makes the
work easier.

17. Pick axe is used to excavate the soil. It is

more suitable for hard soil which is quite
difficult to dig with spade of hoe.

18. Plumb Bob – used to check the verticality of

structures. It contains a solid metal bob
connected to the end of a thread. It is also
used in surveying to level the instrument
position.

19. Earth Rammer – After the excavation of

ground, the lower surface may be uneven. To
level the surface earth rammer is used. It
contains big square shaped block at its end
with which the ground is leveled.

7
20. Rubber Boots – during construction work, legs may
damage due to contact with chemical materials like
cement or physical accidents. So, for safety rubber
shoes are required.

21. Safety Glasses – To prevent the eyes from

dust, chemical actions of materials etc. safety
glasses should be maintained.

22. Safety Helmet – any material or structure

may fall from height during construction
work. So, to protect the head from injury or
any fatal accident, this safety helmet should
be used.

23. Sledge Hammer – used when the ground is

hard and contains rock layers. A large
weighted metal head is provided at the wooden
handle with which hard layers can be cracked,
which makes easy for digging.

24. Spade – used to dig the soil for foundation

trenched etc. It contains metal plate at the end of
long wooden handle.

8
25. Spirit Level – used to check the level of the surface. The spirit level is
placed on surface and bubble is checked. The surface is leveled when the
bubbled in the tube settles at the middle of tube.

26. Wedge – small hard metal blade which is

used to cut the rock surfaces with the help of
sledge hammer.

What I Have Learned

Carpentry is one of the most traditional roles in the construction industry.

Carpenters are needed for almost every construction project, so if you want to be one
of them, the first thing you need to do is to know the basic tools used in carpentry.
It is very important to know the tools because it makes your job easier and fast. Tools
extend the ability and help the worker in doing the job.

Skills is not the only thing needed in carpentry, we also need to follow
construction company rules and regulations to avoid problems and unnecessary
expenses. By following rules and regulations, you protect the company from lawsuits.
It makes a stable environment where people feel safe to come to work and to be
themselves. The result is less turnover, more teamwork and higher company morale.
