4. I am an eight sided polygon with 8 angles and 8 vertices. I am a __________
5. I am a nine sided polygon with 9 angles and nine vertices. I am a_____________

B. Establishing a purpose The teacher will ask some students to guess what the object inside the box is
for the and let them identify the name of the of the shape.
lesson/Motivation/
Motive Questions

The teacher will explain that understanding solid figures is important because
they are used in many everyday objects, such as buildings, furniture, and toys.
C. Presenting Show pictures of the different types of solid figures that will be covered in the lesson:
examples/instances of cube, prism, pyramid, cylinder, cone, and sphere.
the new lesson
Have the students identify the names of each figure and point out the
different characteristics of each figure, such as the number of faces, edges,
and vertices.

D. Discussing new concepts There were different three-dimensional shapes around us. There were many solid
and practicing new skills objects, can you identify one? Most of the objects around have three dimensions:
#1 length, width and height.

Solid figures are three-dimensional figures. A three-dimensional object has length,

width and height. Moreover, they may have faces, edges and ve rtices.

A face is the flat surface of a solid figure.

An edge is formed when two faces meet.

An edge is a straight line segment.

A vertex is a point where edges meet.

Solid figures are either polyhedron or non-polyhedron. A solid polyhedron if all its
faces are polygons, otherwise if it is a non-polyhedron.

A polyhedron may be a prism or a pyramid.

A prism is made up of two parallel and congruent bases, which can be any polygon.
The other faces are parallelograms. A prism is named after the shape of its base. If its
base is a triangle, it is called a triangular prism. If it is a pentagon, it is called a
pentagonal prism.

A pyramid has only one base, which can also be any polygon. The other faces
are triangles which meet at a common vertex. A pyramid is also named after
the shape of its base. If the base is a square, we call it a square pyramid. If the
base is a triangle, we call it a triangular pyramid. If the base is an octagon, we
call it an octagonal pyramid.

Faces, Edge and Vertex of a Solid Figure

E. Discussing new concepts Based on the previous lesson, you have identified the different solid figures. Every
and practicing new skills solid figure has a pattern; the images that are drawn on a paper are indeed plane
#2 figures. Let’s try to make a net for the solid fissures:

The diagram above is called net. A net is a flat pattern that, when folded and taped
together builds a solid.
F. Developing mastery Group Activity:
(leads to Formative Setting of Standards
Assessment 3) House Rules/Standards/Guidelines:
(Follow the mnemonic/memory device.)
G- Give thoughtful feedback
R- Respect others & their thoughts
O- On task all the time
U- Use soft voices
P- Participate actively
S- Stay with your group

Have students work in groups to make models of different solid figures using
various materials such as cartolina, cardboard and colored paper.
Learning Task 1: Identify the solid figure for each object by matching column A
to column B. Write the letters of your answers on the space provided.
Column A Column B
_____1. Box of soap A. Cone
_____2. Camera stand B. Cube
_____3. Christmas ornament C. Cylinder
_____4. Dice D. Pyramid
_____5. Domino E. Rectangular Prism
_____6. Drum F. Sphere
_____7. Full moon
_____8. Ice cream holder
_____9. Mt. Mayon
_____10. Soccer ball
Learning Task 2: Match each of the following 3-D shapes on Column A to the
appropriate net in Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on the
space provided.

G. Finding practical Learning Task 5: Make models of the following solid figures using cartolina.
applications of concepts
and skills in daily living

1. cube 2. rectangular prism

3. pyramid 4. Cylinder

5. cone

H. Making generalizations Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned about solid figures.
and abstractions about Encourage them to think about the practical applications of solid figures in
the lesson their everyday lives.
I. Evaluating learning Learning Task 3: Identify each solid figure. Write the answer on the space provided.

J. Additional activities for Learning Task 6: Give the number of faces, edges and vertices of the following objects
application or and identify the solid figure each object resembles.
remediation ____1. ball ______6. Dice
_____2. globe ______7. Ice cream cone
_____3. funnel ______8. Tin can
_____4. test tube ______9. Party hat
_____5. Tent ______10.shoe box
