▪ The Ballast Water Management Plan

▪ Aim
➢ to provide guidance and assistance to the vessel’s crew and operators in the operation of the
ballast water exchange system.
➢ Regulation D-1 the Ballast Water Exchange standard and
➢ Regulation D-2 details the Ballast Water treatment standard

▪ Where Ballast Water exchange is to be conducted?

➢ Conduct ballast water exchange at least 200 nautical miles from the nearest land and in
the water of at least 200 meters in depth.
➢ A Port State, may designate areas where ballast water exchange may be conducted if there are
locations of operation where the distance from nearest land and water depth do not meet the
above requirements.
▪ The Ballast Water Exchange Methods:

1. Sequential method:

➢ the ballast water tank is first emptied and then refilled with replacement ballast water to
achieve at least a 95 per cent volumetric exchange.

2. Flow-through method:

➢ overflow or other arrangements in order to get at least 95 per cent volumetric exchange of
ballast water.
➢ Pumping through three times the volume of each ballast water tank

3. Dilution method:

➢ replacement ballast water is filled through the top of the ballast tank
➢ simultaneous discharge from the bottom at the same flow rate
➢ maintaining a constant level in the tank throughout the ballast exchange operation.
• All-new ships must comply with D2 performance standards.
• All existing ships are required to meet the D2 standards at the first IOPP renewal survey after
8th September 2019
• All vessels must comply with D2 standards before 8th September 2024.
▪ 429. What is Ballast water Management ? Explain about BWM ?
➢ Ballast means mechanical, Physical, Chemical and Biological process either in Combination
to remove or discharge of Harmful Aquatic or tiny Path or Pathogens.
▪ Methods of BWM are
➢ Exchanging…………………..……D1
➢ Onboard Treatment……………D2
➢ Isolation.
▪ Ballast water Exchange Method
➢ Sequential Method → First Empty and Refilled at least 95% Volumetric Exchange
➢ Flow through Method → Overflow (3 time the Volume of each ballast water tank)also 95%
➢ Dilution Method → Filled through the Top of tank and Simultaneously discharge
. from bottom at the same flow rate.
▪ Ballast water treatment Method
➢ Mechanical treatment method………..filtration
➢ Physical treatment method…………….heating
➢ Chemical treatment method…………….Naocl (sodium hyprochloride)
▪ Ballast Water Exchange
➢ At least200N.m from the nearest land 200 m in depth
