1.1Background Study
1.1.1 General Overview.
FORMATION evaluation is the process of using borehole measurements to
evaluate the characteristics of subsurface formations.

Formation evaluation is a crucial aspect of the petroleum industry, involving the

systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data from well logs and
other sources to assess the characteristics of subsurface formations. It plays a
vital role in identifying potential hydrocarbon reservoirs, evaluating reservoir
properties, optimizing well placement and completion strategies, and
maximizing the recovery of hydrocarbons from the reservoir.

 Objectives of Formation Evaluation

The primary objectives of formation evaluation are to:

 Identify potential hydrocarbon reservoirs: Formation evaluation aims to

determine the presence of hydrocarbons and their potential for
production. This involves evaluating the porosity and permeability of the
reservoir rocks, which dictate the ability of fluids to flow through them.
 Assess reservoir properties: Formation evaluation provides insights into
the physical properties of the reservoir rocks and fluid characteristics,
such as rock type, mineralogy, lithology, pore structure, fluid type,
saturation, and pressure distribution.

 Optimize well placement and completion: Formation evaluation data

guides the optimal placement of wells within the reservoir, ensuring
maximum contact with productive zones. It also helps determine the
appropriate completion techniques, such as the type of wellbore casing
and perforations, to maximize production efficiency.

1.1.2 Research Topic .
During drilling operations one can obtain, with coring, mud-logging and well logging,
all the information needed to study a formation in terms of its physical
characteristics. With well logging data concerning resistivity, gamma radiation,
density, porosity, existing faults, underground wave velocity and dips is recovered
and send up to the surface during and after drilling.

Well logging methods allow the establishment of porosity, saturation and,

indirectly, permeability parameters in order to take conclusions about the existence
and location, along the drilled hole, of pay zones rich in hydrocarbon to exploit.

The work centered on the analysis and correlation of provided logs from wells
located in sirt Basin, Libya, with the objective of pay zone identification and to
explain similarities between logs in order to get a general definition of the drilled
formations.

Software Petrel was used in order to make a correlation between the wells, after a
previous analysis. The correlation was successful and allowed to take conclusions
about the porosity, permeability and saturation of the formation, as well as a
general characterization of the constituting rock.

1.2 Problem statement.

The Field 103A in the sirt Basin, Libya, poses significant challenges in
understanding its formation properties and evaluating its reservoir potential.
Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive formation evaluation and properties
models that accurately characterize the reservoir's lithology, porosity, water
saturation, and permeability. Consequently, this knowledge gap hampers
effective reservoir management decisions, drilling strategies, and optimization
of hydrocarbon recovery.

1.3 Objective Scope of work of this project:

1.3.1 Objective of study :

The objective of this study is to build a 3D reservoir property model to
improve reservoir management, reserve estimation, to understand the field
that has complex geometry, to aid decision making, to improve production, to
decide drilling scenarios, and guide reservoir simulation research to
determine alternative well locations and different production scenarios.

1.3.2 Scope of work of this project:

The scope of this project is to take data for the Intisar field and enter it into Petrel
software, to create a three-dimensional models , distribute permeability, porosity,
and water concentration on it, and perform comparisons between wells, all of this in
the term formation evaluation.

1.4 Methodology
Petrel software 2017 has been used to build 3D model. Petrel is a PC- based workflow
application for subsurface interpretation and modeling .Data preparation is the basis
for geologic model. On this basis of software demand and research area
characteristic, the data prepare for this 3D-geological model are well heads, well tops,
well logs. The input data is imported from files – on file for each data object.

These data include:

1-Well head: include the position of each well in 3-dimentions, and the measured
depth along the path.

5
2- Well tops: Markers representing significant points (well picks) along the well path,
normally a change in stratigraphy.

3- Well logs: the data cover effective porosity and water saturation values along the
well path.
