TOPIC 5:

EDUCATION SYSTEM IN
MALAYSIA

INTRODUCTION
• In Malaysia, education is the responsibility of the Federal government.

• The Ministry of Education (MOE),is a ministry of the Government of Malaysia that is


responsible for education system, compulsory education, pre-tertiary education,
technical and vocational education and training (TVET), curriculum standard,
textbook, standardized test, language policy, translation.

INTRODUCTION
• The national education system has a 1-6-3-2 structure.

1 YEAR Pre-school

6 YEARS Primary education

3 YEARS Lower secondary education

2 YEARS Upper secondary education

• Students sit for common public examinations at the end of primary (UPSR), lower
secondary (PT3), upper secondary (SPM, SPMV) and sixth form levels (STPM).

AIM OF EDUCATION IN MALAYSIA

ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE

THE ACHIEVEMENT OF NATIONAL INTEGRATION AND


UNITY AMONG THE VARIOUS RACES.

• All government policies, ministries, programmes, schools


and activities are geared towards achieving these
objectives.

• Stresses the holistic development of the individual based on


the 5 Principles of the National Ideology or RUKUN NEGARA.

• National unity and development through education system


is manifested in the NATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION

“Education in Malaysia is an on-going effort towards


further developing the potential of individuals in a holistic
and integrated manner, so as to produce individuals who
are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically
balanced and harmonious, based on a firm belief in and
devotion to God. Such an effort is designed to produce
Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and
competent, who possess high moral standards, and who
are responsible and capable of achieving high level of
personal well-being as well as being able to contribute to
the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and
the nation at large.”

THE OBJECTIVES OF NPE

1 To serve as an enlightenment to provide guidance to all efforts used to develop and


improve the national education.
2 To provide the policy and basic consideration to determine the objectives of National
Education.
3 As a reference to help educators to understand the national education system and
provide necessary guidance for educators to carry out their educational duties.
4 To provide the policy and the basic consideration to plan the school curriculum, design
learning materials and determine strategies for teaching-learning activities.
5 To instruct students who will be able to fulfil their duties as responsible citizens.
6 To produce progressive, skilful and efficient citizens to carry out the duties productively and
satisfactorily so as to contribute towards the advancement and development of the
country.
