INVESTIGATION No. 2
EXPLORING ELECTRIC POTENTIAL AND DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS

I. OBJECTIVES:
A. Determine the relationship between electric potential and distance for a point charge.

II. MATERIALS
A. Laptop / Cell phone

III. PROCEDURES:
PART 1
A. Explore by placing a 1 nC positive point charge in the middle of the screen. Move the voltage probe box (shown to
the right) to different locations near the charge.

i. How does the voltage number change? How does the color in the circle with the crosshairs change?

ANSWER:
 The voltage number of the positive point charge changes as we change the distance. As the
distance increases the voltage number decreases.
 The color of the circle with the crosshairs changes when we shift the point charge from positive to
negative.

B. Replace the positive point charge with a negative point charge. To remove charges, drag them back into their box.
i. How does the voltage probe box shows differ from the negative charge? How is it the same?

ANSWER:
 The voltage prob box shows a difference in sign when the positive point charge shifted into
negative; positive sign manifested in positive point charge while negative sign manifested in
negative point charge.
 They are equal in magnitude.
C. (Click on show numbers and tape measure to measure the distances from a field-creating charge to a test charge.
The tape measure can be dragged to a specific distance and placed anywhere on the field.)

IV. DATA & OBSERVATION:

C. OBSERVATION & ANALYSIS:

The results show that the distance of 0.0480m, 0.0976m, 0.0150m, 0.0201m, 0.0252m, the electric potential in
positive point charge is 17.36V, 8.891V, 5.893V, 4.406V, 3.528 respectively. While the electric potential in negative
point charge is -17.36V, - 8.891V, - 5.893V, - 4.406V, - 3.528V respectively. These values suggest that the
relationship between the distance and the magnitude of the electric potential is inversely proportional.

V. CONCLUSION:
The experiment shows that the distance and electric potential have inversely proportional relationship. The reason for this
claim is that when we increase the distance the electric potential decreases. Additionally, as we replace the positive point
charge to negative point charge, we observed that there’s a change in sign, but the magnitude remains the same.
