B. Presentation
Let’s now proceed to our lesson which is
about the elements of a story. Do you
have any idea what are the elements of a
(Cybi raise her hand)
story? Anyone who would like to answer.

Yes, Cybi.
“The elements of a story are
characters, setting, plot, theme,
conflict and solution.”

Excellent Cybi!

You may think that stories are just really

good ideas put together on a page by an
author. However, when authors write a story,
they begin by thinking about how to fit certain
parts into a certain structure. It's called a
story structure, and it consists of the
elements. Those five elements are
characters, setting, problem, events, and

Ora et Doce!
solution.
Characters
The people, animals, or creatures in a
story.
Example:

Possible Answers:
I know that most of you, really like to read
books and watch cartoons. Can you tell me  Cinderella
what books or movies that has your favorite  Alice in the Wonderland
character on it?
 Pinocchio
Oh! That’s good to hear that you have your  The arrogant rose
favorites in your mind. There are two types of
character, which are protagonist and
antagonist.

Protagonist is the main character to whom

or whose life of the story happens.
Example:

Does anyone know this person in the She is Princess Snow White, teacher!
picture?

Correct! She is Snow White and she is the

protagonist of the story “Snow White and 7
dwarves”.

Why do you think she is our protagonist? Because the story revolves around her
teacher.

Very well said! Thank you for your answer. I

think you learn what is a protagonist. Now,
let us proceed to next.

Antagonist
The character that opposes the protagonist.
Example:

Does anyone know this person in the The evil queen turned to witch from
picture? Snow White.

Ora et Doce!
Correct! She is the Evil Queen from “Snow
White and 7 dwarves”.

Why do you think she is our antagonist? It is because she kept on hurting Snow
White and the total opposite of her.

Very well said! Thank you for your answer.

You now have learned the two types of
characters. Now, let us proceed to the next
element of the story which is the setting.

Setting
The time and place in which a story takes
place.
Examples:

So this picture is based on the story “Little The setting of the story teacher is in
Red Riding Hood”. What do you think is the forest because there are trees and
setting of the story based on the photo? the scene is during the day because
the picture is bright and sunny.
(Jhona raise her hand)

Very Good! You are correct! Let us give Cybi

around of applause. Yes, the story happens
in a forest and this scene is during the day.
Now that is setting. Next element of the story
we will get to know is the plot.

Plot
The actions or events that take place in a
story. It has the beginning, the middle and
the ending events.

Can someone in the class, give me the Answers:

definition of the beginning, middle,and
ending of a story?  Beginning- it gives the
problem faced by the main

 Middle-it prevents the

characters to solve the
problem.

opposing forces.

Ora et Doce!
To further understand what conflict is, let us
learn the different kinds of conflict.

Kinds of Conflict:
Man vs. Man
-Problem against another character.

characters in this picture?

Yes, they are Beast and Gaston of the story

“Beauty and The Beast”.

As you can see, Gaston and Beast has an They are Beast and Gaston, teacher.
ongoing conflict between them resulting to
situations like fights.

Man vs. Nature

-Problem against forces of nature or animals.

Who here knows this movie?

Yes, this scene is from “The Lorax”.

That is “The Lorax”, teacher.
Now if you recall the plot of the story, we
know that this movie talks about how man is
destroys nature because of greed and there
search to find and plant the last seed of tree.
As we can see this movie is a perfect
example of the conflict between man vs.
nature because the story showcases the
problem between man and nature.

Man vs. Society

-Problem against the laws or belief of a
group.

Ora et Doce!
Who here knows this movie?

stereotyping and how the main character get
over this challenge as a princess and as a
daughter to her family.

Man vs. Self

-Problem with ideas of right and wrong,
physical limitations, choices and etc.

I know you all know this story. Can someone

give me its name?

Yes, the story is entitled “Pinocchio”. It is a It’s Pinocchio, teacher!

perfect example to the kind of conflict which
is Man vs. Self because the story tells about
Pinocchio’s struggle to accept himself.

We are done with the kinds of conflicts. Now

let us proceed element of the story which is
solution.

Solution
The solution is how the characters solve their
problem.

Example:

To further understand, who among here

knows the story “Sleeping Beauty”? What to
think was the conflict or problem present in
the story? I know teacher! The main problem of
the story was that Princess Aurora fell
Now may I ask, how was the problem solved? into a curse of deep sleep that was
given by an evil magician.
Yes, you are correct. The solution of the
conflict in the story “Sleeping Beauty” was a A prince came and give the princess a
kiss from the prince. With the so called “true kiss teacher.
love’s kiss” Princess Aurora wakes up from
the cursed slumber.

Now the next element of the story is moral or

theme.

Ora et Doce!
Moral or Theme
The moral or theme is the idea that runs
through the story. It often teaches the lesson.
Example:

Now who here know the story “The Lion and

The Mouse”?

Let me ask everyone what is the lesson of Me, teacher!

the story and what have you learned from it?

The lesson of the story teacher was

that never judge someone directly and
learn how to believe and trust
Now, that we already finished our lesson someone especially the people whom

glad that you were able to answer all my
questions.

E. Application
We will divide everyone into 3 groups and your
goal is to make a story based on the situation we
have provided. What will you do, is to draw a
sequence like a comic in cartolina paper and
after completing, explain it to the whole class.

(GROUP 1)
Paul is on his way to the grocery store. He
saw a wallet on the street.

a. He will pick it up and keep it.

b. He will pick it up and get the cash.
c. He will pick it up and get the cash.

(GROUP 2)
Jeff accidentally got the wrong luggage in
the airport.

Ora et Doce!
a. He will bring the luggage with him.
b. He will leave the bag in the airport.
c. He will ask help from the airport
authorities to look for the owner

(GROUP 3)
Mr. Lee handles the money at the cash
register. His customer gave him an extra
₱100 when he paid for the items bought.

a. Mr. Lee will return the extra ₱100.

b. Mr. Lee will put it in the tip jar.
c. Mr. Lee will put it in the cash
register.

I give you enough time to draw the sequence of

your assigned story and passed it when I said
“STOP” to be fair with everyone.
