BSME – 2C Life and Works of Rizal

1. What possible theme that can be highlighted in the novel of Alexander Dumas and
Rizal’s novels?
- Based on my observation, the common theme that should be highlighted between the two
authors’ novels is about the abuse of authority or power. With Alexander’s novel ‘The
Count of Monte Cristo’ it was evident how the higher ups who is in power, especially the
counts were very greedy and is definitely taking advantage of the connections, money
and ability that they have whilst possessing all these things. Rizal’s novels also depict the
wrong doings of the Spaniards during his time, their abuse for power over reigning the
Philippines were foretold, thus most of his writings were then the reason why he was
considered to have rebelled or committed treason against the country.

2. Make a critical comparison of the characters portrayed in both novels.

- From Jose Rizal’s Noli me Tangere, I can somehow sense a similarity to how Alexander
Dumas shaped the character of Edmond Dantes. When Ibarra was abducted and
imprisoned, we can also recall how Edmond suffered so bad in prison as well, both
personas after then were hungry for revenge and lifted their selves up by acquiring
knowledge and useful skills, and much so, plotting for their revenge. Thus, the identity
where Ibarra once again came back disguised as Simoun, was indeed very much alike to
how Edmond was being the Count of Monte Cristo. Moreover, with the unending love for
Maria Clara, shows the similarity of how Edmond was very true to his love for Mercedes.

3. In what way Dumas’ novel influenced the Novels of Rizal?

- It has been said that ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ was Rizal’s favorite novel back in his
teenage years. Maybe because in the same way, it has been relatable for much of these
realities happened in the historical period when Rizal lived. We can also see that just
from the scenarios of the novels and what the characters have gone through, they
somehow owe a semblance of similarity with each other, mainly, in their perspective,
attitude and belief.
