THE CIRCULAR

RELATION OF
ACTS AND
CHARACTER
WHAT IS
CIRCULAR
RELATION OF
ACTS AND
CHARACTER?
IN THE PROCESS OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT,
THERE EXISTS A FASCINATING INTERPLAY
BETWEEN THE INDIVIDUAL ACTS WE PERFORM
AND THE MORAL CHARACTER WE POSSESS.

THIS RELATIONSHIP LIES AT THE HEART OF

MORAL DEVELOPMENT AND SHEDS LIGHT ON
HOW OUR ACTIONS SHAPE OUR CHARACTER
AND VICE VERSA.
A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL ACTS
AND MORAL CHARACTER. A PERSON'S ACTIONS
DETERMINE HIS OR HER MORAL CHARACTER,
BUT MORAL CHARACTER ITSELF GENERATES
ACTS THAT HELP IN DEVELOPING EITHER
VIRTUE OR VICE. THIS GOES TO SHOW THAT
MORAL DEVELOPMENT SHOULD ALSO BE
UNDERSTOOD IN THE SENSE OF HUMAN
FLOURISHING.

ACTS THAT BUILD CHARACTER:
When we engage in actions, they have a profound impact on shaping our moral character.
Not all acts contribute equally, but those that emanate from our moral character
significantly matter in our development.

Imagine a loop: our actions determine our moral character, yet our moral character itself
generates acts that either nurture virtue or pave the way for vice.

In essence, moral development is intricately tied to human flourishing. This flourishing is

achieved through the habitual practice of moral and intellectual excellences, commonly
known as virtues.

According to the wise philosopher Aristotle, the function of a human being lies in
activities that manifest the best states of their rational aspect—the virtues. These virtuous
traits of character are not mere products of fortune; they result from learning, constant
practice, and cultivation.

Virtuous acts complete and perfect human life, contributing to self-realization and
happiness.
GREEK PERSPECTIVE
The Greek moralists believed that someone of good
moral character possesses the ability to:

Determine with regularity and reliability which individual acts are

appropriate and reasonable in specific situations.

Decide how and when to secure goods and resources for

themselves and others.

Aristotle emphasized that defining rules for moral praise

and blame isn’t straightforward. It requires the judgment of
a virtuous person—one with good moral character.
