Multistep Percentages

1. A supermarket stocks 300 lbs of potatoes. Twenty-five percent of the potatoes are sold in 5 lb
bags. The rest are sold in 1.5 lb bags. What is the total weight of potatoes sold in 1.5 lb bags?

2. A group of children hold a bake sale and raise $90. Ten percent comes from selling cookies.
Fifty percent of the remaining money comes from selling chocolate cakes. How much is made
from selling chocolate cakes?

3. A builder has 600 bricks delivered to build an addition to a home. Fifty percent are used on the
first day, and 25% are used on the second day. How many bricks are left after the second day?

4. Niamh enters a 500-word story competition. Each student’s story must be exactly 500
words. If she wrote 10% of the required words on the first day, how many words does she have
left to write?

5. A swimmer swims 800 m every morning. She swims 50% of the distance using the front crawl
stroke and 25% of the remaining distance using the backstroke before finishing with the front
crawl. How far does she swim backstroke?

9. A baker has 1,000 lbs of white flour and 500 lbs of whole wheat flour. The flour is mixed
together equally, and 50% is used to make bread. How much flour is used to make bread?

10. A book is 340 pages long. Ten percent of the book is the introduction. Alex reads the
introduction and 50% of the rest of the book in one week. How many pages are left to read?
