Activity Sheets - Ben Brooks - Stories For Kids Who Dare To Be Different
Activity Sheets - Ben Brooks - Stories For Kids Who Dare To Be Different
The pre-learning task will generate ideas about what it means to be different, some
students may already be able to articulate that being different can be a good thing. This
will be returned to at the end of the pack, with students adding to their initial ideas, now
that they know what being different can achieve.
The activities from Create your own Kid who Dares to be Different onwards all feed into
each other.
They can then analyse some artwork from the book, identifying why it has been used and
what it represents, and then create their own artwork, using the symbolism they have
identified. They can then self-assess their work, explaining their choices.
Students can look at the quote from Biddy Mason, and think about why she said this.
They can then create their own ‘mantra’ for their kid. Again, they can self-assess by
explaining their choices.
Finally, students can make a comic strip to present their Kid who Dares to be Different.
The rest of the activities in the pack can be used as starters, plenaries, homeworks or full
lessons.
Note: The Emma Gonzalez activity is to encourage young people to think about their
own potential (as is the speech writing activity) and to promote the idea of unity.
Classrooms can be decorated with the paperchains that are made during this activity.

DIFFERENT
Kesz Valdez and and Maria Lorena Barros have had a positive impact on the
Philippines. How have they improved the lives of the people of their country?
Now swap your questions with your partner. Can you think what the answers might be?

shooting, which motivated her to use her voice to make a change. Cut
out the strips, place them in the correct order and link them together to
form a paper chain. What do you think the paper chain could represent?
Emma is a high school student with a love of art, writing and astronomy.
As the debate about gun control intensifies, more people are becoming
aware of the need for change.

PLANNING:
Look at the quote from Emma Gonzales at the end of her story. What message is she
conveying? Why was she so successful in capturing peoples attention?
Point 1: Start by setting the scene: “Let me transport you to a classroom different to ours.
Instead of a wealth of beautiful diversity, you see uniformity. Every single person is
the same. Not only do they all look the same, they feel the same, think the same, do
the same. What is the problem with this scenario?
Point 2: Provide an example from the book of someone who has dared to be different. What
did they have to struggle through? Why did they bother to make a change? What
have they achieved? What do they mean to the people whose lives they affected?
Point 3: How can young people use their differences to make a change?
Provide examples to inspire your audience.

How do they use their power of being different to create this change?
Why do you think the artist, Quinton Winter, has contrasted the colours of the women to
the red colour of the background?
Now explain your choices in the space around the outside. E.g. I have chosen the colour blue
because it is a calming colour, and my character always manages to keep calm, even when they
are being pressured to hide their differences.
