I. Objectives:
- The experiment helps students understand the fundamentals static balancing,
know how to use static balancing equipment and apply balancing theory to balance
a rotating part with small thickness.

II. Data
2.1. Diameter of the circular disk: l1 = 19.6cm
2.2. Weight of the balancing mass: m' = 5g
Position of the balancing mass: r' =74mm
Position of unbalancing mass: r = 55mm

III. Discussions and Conclusions:

3.1. Determine the product of the disk’s mass and the distance between the center of
mass and center of rotation (mr):
- The principle of static balancing is to redistribute masses in a part to make
its center of mass and center of rotation coincident. As a result, the
centrifugal force Fc = 0 and the part achieves balanced state.
- A part having weight of m rotates with an angular velocity of ω. Assuming
its center of mass locates at a distance r from its center of rotation. The part
is unbalanced due to the centrifugal force caused by m, r and ω. To balance
this part, a balancing mass (m') is added at the opposite site of m about the
rotation center, the distance between m' and the rotation center is r' where
the centrifugal force caused by m' and r' equals to the one caused by m and r.
As a result, all centrifugal forces applied in the part are eliminated and it
achieves static balanced state.

3.2. At initial state (unbalanced state), what is the value of the centrifugal force applies
to the disk when it rotates 1000 rpm? How does this centrifugal force affect the structure
of entire machine/mechanism?

3.3. Assuming the rotating part has a ring form with a diameter of d. Based on obtained
experimental results, determine the proper weight of the balancing mass (m') needs to be
used to balance it.
