In Morrocco, stands the University of Al Karaoiune and it's not your average university.

On it's
walls lay Arabic Calligraphy with patterns mapping it's floors,in the middle lies a single, circular
courtyard with its pillars making it a true mosque-school, hybrid building. The classes aren't
conventional also, the students sit back in a semi-circle facing their instructor.
Located in the blossoming city of Fez,this university is one of the oldest in the world. Its story is
also one worth paying attention to as it all begins with one woman,by the name Fatima Al-Fihri.
Fatima was born into a wealthy family with roots in Tunisia, but the family later moved down to
Fez,Morocco. She and her sister,Mariam were well educated and they also inherited their father's
fortune after he passed away.
In 859 A.D.,she built a mosque which evolved into a center of higher education with courses of
study ranging from religious studies to mathematics.Long after her death, the university still runs till
today.
Though most of her story remains a mystery, her legacy still stands under the Moroccan sun
marking history and challenging viewpoints about women in history.
