Question 4 (10 marks)
Your friend has recently been appointed to the Board of Directors of a successful Australia-based
Nutritional Supplements company that intends to expand internationally. The CEO has mentioned
that he would like the company to be like the ‘Harley-Davidson of Nutrition’ or the ‘Starbucks of
Coffee’. You take that to mean that he understands the importance of the Australian-ness of the
envisaged overseas target market’s perception of the product.
Now suppose in your research you discover that the envisaged overseas target market demands a
high level of ‘local responsiveness’ and that there is already a high degree of ‘global integration’.
Illustrate and Apply the International Strategy Model (ISM) to inform your CEO and board colleagues
why a simple ‘export’ strategy is unlikely to be ineffective, and suggest an alternative (named)
international strategy that would attempt to balance cost efficiency with local responsiveness.
Answer this question in about 250 words plus an illustration of the relevant model
Your CEO has requested that you lead a cross-functional management team with the aim of advising
the Board of Directors on 5 key strategic initiatives, emanating from your team’s SWOT and CIA
analysis. He envisages that 2 will be of the ‘Exploit’ type, 1 will be a strategic ‘Shine-Up’ strategy, 1
will be a ‘Conquer’ type strategy, and 1 ‘Avoid’.
Prepare a brief explaining what each type of strategy means and how it is derived.
