ORGANS OF SPEECH
THERE ARE 5 ORGANS OF SPEECH IN WHICH THE ARABIC LETTERS COME
FROMS
❑ AL-JAWF: The empty space in the chest through the throat and mouth
❑ AL-HALQ: The throat
❑ AL-LISAAN: The tongue
❑ ASH-SHAFATAAN: The two Lips
❑ Al-KHAYSHOOM: The Nose or Nasal Passage
AL-JAWF
AL-JAWF: This is the empty space in the chest area. There are three letters that comes from this
area. The three letter are

‫يوا‬
▪ These letters only come from the Al-Jawf in certain conditions as follows
1. The letters are Saakin. This means that they must have a sukoon or come with no vowel
(Fatha, Kasrah and Dommah)
2. It must be preceded with a corresponding signs
3. When these conditions are fulfilled, then we call them Jawf or Madd letters
AL-HALQ
Al-Halq: The throat, In the throat we have 3 exits and 6 letters
‫خ‬ ‫غ‬ ‫ح‬ ‫ع‬ ‫ه‬ ‫ء‬

Middle of the throat ( ‫ ح‬,‫ع‬
Top of the throat (‫ خ‬, ‫غ‬
AL-LISAAN(THE TONGUE)
It has 4 areas, 10 exits and 18 letters
Areas of tongue:

1. Back of tongue ‫ك‬ ‫ق‬


2. Middle of the tongue(‫ي‬ ‫ج‬ ‫ش‬
3. Edges & Sides of the tongue ‫لض‬
4. Tip of the tongue ‫ن ر ت د ط س ص ز ث ذ ظ‬
ASH-SHAFATAAN
Ash-Shafataan: The 2 lips. We have 2 exits and 4 letters in
total

Exits on lips:
1. The two lips together: ‫و‬ ‫م ب‬
2. The bottom lip with the upper teeth ‫ف‬
AL-KHAYSHOOM
This is the nasal passage where the
Ghunna (the attribute for the letters ‫ ن‬and
‫م‬. There are no letters that come from this
organ. However it's considered an organ
due to it being used in recitation
