Lesson Plan Project

Lesson Goals or Learning Targets (Word these as measurable student outcomes.)

- Students will successfully complete problems to subtract mixed numbers and fractions.
- Students will understand how to regroup in a problem with fractions, as needed.

Lesson Objectives or Success Criteria (Word these as student actions, use verbs.)

- Students will engage in review lessons as a group.

- Students will be prepared with a pencil and extra work paper.
- Students will pay attention, quietly, as I give instructions.
- Students will complete their review activity and assessment (including showing work
for each problem).

Lesson Plan Content (Written narrative paragraph about the lesson content.)
To begin, I will call a small group that needs extra support and practice with subtracting
fractions involving mixed numbers and regrouping. I will conduct a brief check-in about how
they feel about their progress in subtracting fractions. I will then explain to them the purpose
of this lesson and what we will be doing and make it clear that I expect work to be shown for
all problems. I will then handout a worksheet that involves the topic, in which I will review the
steps on the first few problems. I will go over the first problem on my own, and then will slowly
involve students in the process of the problems. Then I will have the group finish the last half
of the worksheet on their own to give them about 10-15 minutes to ask for help and complete
the problems independently. After the time is finished, I will collect the worksheets and pass
out the assessment activity. I will explain to the students how they will get a set of cards,
some with problems to complete, and some with answers to match together independently.
When they have correctly matched the cards, they will be allowed to return to their desks.

CCSS Rationale (Describe the specific Common Core State Standards addressed during the teaching
of this lesson plan.)

Students in fifth grade will learn how to solve problems involving subtracting fractions. This includes
mixed numbers and regrouping.

Instructional Procedures

 Focusing Event (Describe how you will get students to focus attention on your teaching.)

I will do a quick check-in with students to ask about how they are feeling related to the
subject we will be reviewing. They will show me by thumbs-up (or halfway, or down)
and then I will ask if they have any questions before we start.

 Instructional Strategies (Describe each of the instructional methods you will employ during the
lesson.)

Direct Instruction- I will give instructions to the small group and will review a few
problems with me leading the process.
Independent Study- After working on a part of the worksheet together as a group,
students will complete the worksheet on their own with the opportunity to ask
questions. Then students will be completing an assessment activity on their own.

 Student Participation (How will you engage students and get them on board to participate?)

I will call on students to answer questions related to solving the problem. I will also
explain

 Formative Check (How will you check that all students are involved and engaged in the lesson?

I will be doing visual checks to ensure that all students in the group are working on the
problem (and showing the work they do on paper).

 Closure (How will you end the lesson purposefully, with intentionality?)
After completing my review time, I will ask students about something they feel they
improved on, and to ask any last-minute questions.

 Assessment (How will you assess that students achieved the lesson goals or learning targets?)

The students will successfully complete problems written on a set of cards and match
it correctly with the answered one. The students will also show all work for their
problems on a sheet of paper.

Lesson Plan Materials (Include everything needed to successfully complete the lesson with
the full class. Remember to include all supplies, as well as technology, whiteboard space,
classroom space, etc.)
