STICK IT

Tri-Cast and Bait-Tech man Dave Roberts unveils his
stickymag and gravel tactics for targeting fast-flowing venues.

T
here’s no doubt that when
it comes to river fishing and
amassing weights of fish
quickly, pole to hand or whip
fishing is the way forward.
On rivers where there is decent depth
and flow, it’s usually a groundbait and soil
approach that scores best. While this
is usually my preferred approach, in
recent times I have increasingly
used the combination of maggot
binder (stickymag) and gravel to
supplement, and in some cases,
replace the groundbait. It’s not
effective every day, but there are
certain circumstances where the
combination is deadly.
Species such as roach, dace and
perch love loose feed, but it’s hard
on powerful rivers to congregate
the fish into one area of the peg by
feeding in this way. On rivers like the
Wye, where the Pole Fishing cameras join
me today, the reality is the maggots we feed
are never hitting the riverbed once they’ve
hit the water.
A ball of maggots and gravel is much

different, though. The ball sinks straight

to the bottom and breaks down slowly.
The maggots will eventually wash away in
fast flow but, importantly, they’re staying
in an area for a period of time, creating a
feeding zone for the fish, where you can
really get them lined up.
Another scenario where this method
scores well is where there are nuisance

though, quite often the tiny bits that fizz off
a ball of groundbait can create problems.
Obviously in a match or team situation
the automatic choice is to fish for bleak,
but if they’re too small or sporadic to fish

effectively. It can get a number of fish
feeding on the bottom without the
aforementioned bleak attractants.
An alternative in these scenarios
would be the use of a baitdropper, but
I don’t like this option for a couple
of reasons. Firstly the bait will still be
washed out of the peg quicker, and
secondly I’m not a fan of bouncing
metal things on top of feeding fish –

problem I find it best to put a couple of
decent balls in and also feed some good
amounts of hemp far enough upstream
to land in the same sort of area as the
maggots. This will create a nice little
feeding area and the pattern is usually to
be pestered by bleak for five minutes or
so after the commotion, but soon they
disappear off in front of someone
else who is loose feeding, leaving
you with a free run at the

You can fish this out for

Mix Of The Month

The mix I have used almost exclusively
for the majority of my fishing during the
winter months over the past two years has
been a very complicated one, so make sure
you have a pen and paper around to take
notes: It consists of Special ‘G’ Dark… to
which I add a little bit more Special ‘G’
Dark.
That’s right, nothing else!
Having the dark version in a range that
I regard as the highest quality fishmeal
groundbait available now means I don’t
have to ‘faff’ about when it comes to
colouring the mix in clear water, which is
what I would have done in the past using
a combination of the Gold and Green
variations.
We all know that when it comes to
tackling clear water, as is often the case

•1 large bucket or mixing bowl

• 1 bag of Bait-Tech Special ‘G’ Dark
• 1 groundbait whisk (optional)

during the cooler months, a darker mix is

rarely beaten and due to this I prefer to use
darker mixes in the winter time.
Special ‘G’ Dark enables me to have
a huge impact on a swim with very little
volume of bait. Skimmers, F1s, carp and
even big roach all love this stuff and are
drawn to the high-quality fishmeals and

S
hallow fishing is one discipline
that many anglers get consistently
wrong. In fact, as water
temperatures begin to drop this
statement becomes increasingly
more true.
The main problem is that they start the
session on the deck until they begin to
get line bites and missed chances. At this
point, most try fishing for a few minutes at
12 inches deep, catch nothing, decide the
fish aren’t really shallow and so go back to
struggling to catch off the bottom again.
Of course, during the summer months
this look at what many would class as
shallow can often produce a few fish, so
many will persevere.
The problem is, in a 6ft deep swim,
like today for example, fishing like this

“As long as the hook bait is off the
bottom, that in essence is shallow fishing.”
The other main parts to shallow fishing
are finding the fish and then following
them throughout the session.
Depending upon the species, various fish
could also be sat at different depths in the

Fishing at 16 metres and six metres will
require totally different positioning. For
example, when fishing a ‘top two plus two’
short carp meat line I like to have a roller
close enough and slightly to my right so
that I can ship back, sweep the fish away
from the swim and unship two sections,
which then sit safely on the roller and in
my pole sock while I play the fish. On some
venues this can be your front roller for the
long-pole line, but often it is too close and
gets in the way for me. So if I am fishing
very long at 16 metres I will want two
rollers specifically for that.
You also have to consider the length of

STAGE 1 – BE CRAFTY
I have loads of success adopting a stealthy
approach at the start of sessions. This is a
great way to fool one or two big ’uns

always a few fish spread out in
front of everyone at the start,
it’s only after a few get caught
that they begin to back off and
congregate together.
There’s also a train of thought
that suggests feeding any amount
of bait at the start will quickly draw in
stacks of unwanted silvers into the swim. Plopp in

After one or two early fish you’ll then need

STAGE 6 – ALL-OUT BAGGING

As the light drops and a session draws
towards an end, especially in match
conditions, the fish tend to rock up big-
style. Once this happens you can forget
the negative and frugal feeding. Now those
quality carp have thrown caution to the
wind and are after a feast. At this point the
resident silvers also tend to back off as the
big boys are now well and truly in town!
The last hour of any session often
transforms into a speed race where you
can really attack the peg. Carefully filling
and shipping out a pot of bait can waste
valuable seconds, and that’s when I’d revert
to throwing in bait instead, but sometimes
still in conjunction with an occasional
potful to help concentrate them.
Rather than throw the bait on top of
your float as you’re fishing you’ll foul
hook fewer fish if you wait until you hook
a fish before feeding. I generally like to
throw a decent amount of bait, say around

feeding these 60 grains in two salvos, plus
the double rattle really helps to pull in
more carp.
This way of feeding is rarely as effective at
the start of a session, or even mid-session.
It’s that last 90 minutes to an hour when
you can go at it all guns blazing!

CONCLUSION
As you can see, there’s a lot more to
making a short-pole swim work than doing
the same thing from start to finish. Similar
theories can be applied to almost any bait
and any part of the swim.
The result today has been well over 100lb
of carp, a few quality skimmers and bream,
plus some of the biggest F1s I’ve ever seen

I love fishing for silver fish on
big, open lakes such as Bridges
Lake, here at Monk Lakes in
Kent, where the Pole Fishing
cameras join me today. Bridges
is one of the venue’s more picturesque
lakes, and stretching over a 16-acre area
there is plenty of it to go at. But as I
touched upon earlier, there is a big divide
in target species.
Being such a big lake, it is home to some
big fish, not just carp either – albeit there
are a few in here of specimen proportions.
