Curriculum

Reconstructionist curriculum emphasizes civic education, service learning, critical thinking, and the
exploration of social inequities. Students learn about topics such as civic engagement, social
responsibility, and the causes of social problems.

curriculum focuses on student experience and taking social action on real problems, such as violence,
hunger, international terrorism, inflation, and inequality.

Reconstructionist education was based on the theory that society can be reconstructed through the
complete control of education. The objective was to change society to conform to the basic ideals of the
political party or government in power or to create a utopian society through education.

The curriculum within the Social Reconstructivist classroom, should:

1. Inform students.

2. Stir emotions within students.

3.Shed light upon social inequities.

4.Improve students abilities to think critically.

5.Charge students to take action. (Reeves, 2013)

The teacher's job was to set the environment through organization of space, time, and materials; to
encourage, guide, and stimulate; and to see that all children learn and develop independence and
responsibility.
