Title: Verification of principal of gyroscope and gyroscopic couple using motorized
gyroscope.
Apparatus: Motorized gyroscope, weights, tachometer and voltage regulator.

Theory:
Gyroscope: A gyroscope is a spinning body mounted universally to turn with an angular
velocity of precession in a direction at right angles to the direction of the moment causing it
but its center of gravity will be in a fixed position

Precession : When a force is applied to the gyroscope about the horizontal axis, it may be
found that the applied force meets with resistance and that the gyro, instead of turning about
its horizontal axis, turns about its vertical axis and vice versa. It follows right hand thumb
(screw) rule. Thus the change in direction of plane of rotation of the rotor is known as
precession.

Gyroscopic Couple: It is applied couple needed to change the angular momentum vector of
rotating disc/Gyroscope when it processes. It acts in the plane of coupe which is perpendicular
to both the other planes (plane of spin and plane of precession) it is given as:-
C = I x ω x ωp
Where, I = Moment of inertia of rotor.
ω = Angular velocity of rotor.
ωp = Angular velocity of precession
Procedure:
1. Set the rotating disc of the gyroscope in motion.
2. Slowly increase speed and wait for stability, DO NOT adjust any speed further. Measure
rpm using tachometer.
3. Put weights in pan from 50 gm to 2500 gm for creating couple at defined speed in steps.
4. Observe the axis of spin will presses to a certain degree to retain the angular velocity.
5. Measure the angle of precession and time taken for the respective speed and weight.

Observations:
1. Weight of Rotor (m): 6.9 Kg.
2. Rotor Diameter: (d) = 300 mm (r = 150 mm)
3. Rotor Thickness = 12 mm
4. Distance of bolt of Weight pan from disc Centre (L) = 18.5 cm.

Observation table:

Angular Weight in pan

Sr. No. Speed (rpm) Time (sec)
displacement (kg)
1

Sample Calculations:
I = M. I. of disk
I = (m*r2)/2 = 0.07763 kg.m2

𝜔 = (2*pi*N)/60 =

𝜔𝑝 = (angular displacement/time taken)

𝐶 = 𝐼 × 𝜔 × 𝜔𝑝
C=m*g*L

Conclusion:

It is observed that equation for gyroscopic couple i.e. 𝐶 = 𝐼 × 𝜔 × 𝜔𝑝 is verified
