Huskies Take Hartford Hawks Invitational

The highlight of the Huskies fall 2011 season thus far has to be their impressive win at the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bulls Bridge Golf Club in South Kent, CT. The Huskies took the eld with a convincing 8 stroke victory over Loyola University. The team shot a four over par 868 to capture their rst win of the season including two team rounds at even par or better. To add to the success, senior co-captain Jeb Buchanan took home the individual title by ring a three under par 216 (74-70-69). While it took a four-man playo, Buchanan eventually took home the title on the fourth playo hole to capture his second career title. The rest of the Huskies were not far behind. Junior Brian Hughes nished one shot out

of the playo in a tie for fth. Senior Matt Dziubina (T-13) and Freshman Chris Wiatr (T-19) also captured top 20s. The win was a turning point for the Huskies who had struggled in the early season with appearances at the Turning Stone Intercollegiate as well as the Adams Cup. The win at the Hawks Invitational led to a third place nish at the Connecticut Cup and a second place nish at the Classic at Shelter Harbor. Complete results are listed at the back of the newsletter. The Huskies nish up their last tournament of the year at the Wendys Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Club at Kiawah Island, SC

Every time we watch professional golf, we marvel at how great their short games are. It is true, the pros have amazing short games. We have seen phenomenal shots such as Tigers chip at Augusta in 2005, Bill Haass water shot, or Phil op it from anywhere. While the pros have the ability to hit the amazing shot to get within tap in range, more often than not, when they miss around the green, they miss in the right spots. Pros go over each and every shot with their caddy and discuss where they want to be and where they can miss. Take this par 3 here for example. All of the trouble here is short, so if you are deciding between two clubs, it is best to club up for more distance. Being o the back of this green would not be the worst play in the world. The percentages would tell us that par is going to be made more often o the back of this green than if the ball is short. There are other dangers to look out for. Slope is often a key factor. Chipping uphill is always more benecial than chipping downhill. There are also greens that have areas of rough to avoid. There may be a particularly high area of rough around a particular green that is challenging to chip from. In an ideal world, we hit every green, but as we know, we often miss by a little here and there. The key is to be smart about where you are going to miss in order to give yourself the highest percentage chance of getting up and down from your miss. Try this the next time you are on the course.
