Self-Learning Module 10
Parts of Electric Circuit
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 5 Self-Learning Module 10 on Parts of Electric Circuit!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to

LESSON

Electricity has done a lot of things in our life and even did a great impact
in our living. The existence of different appliances and electric powered
gadgets made our work easier, faster and made our life comfortable. But have
you ever thought how these things works? In this lesson we are going to learn
how simple electric circuit works by knowing its parts and functions.

What is Electric Circuit?

Electric Circuit is a closed-loop

device that provides path for the flow of
electrons or electric current from the
source (batteries or generators) of
energy passing through electrical
conductors (wires) up to the load (light
or appliance) and back to the source.

The Four (4) Main Parts of the Simple Electric Circuit

1. Source of Energy (Power Source)

It is where the energy came from. It supplies energy to power up
the load and make the appliances work. Without the source of energy,
electrical loads will not work. Examples of sources of energy are
batteries (dry cell or wet cell) and wall plug.
2. Conductor (Pathway)
It pertains to the pathway of electric current to flow from the
power source up to the load and back. It connects all the parts of the
circuit. Conductors are usually electrical wires that varies in sizes
depending on the amount of energy flowing in it.
3. Switch
It controls the flow of electric current from entering the
connection to load. The main function of the switch is to close and open
the electrical circuit. When the switch is turned on, the electric current
flows, making the circuit a closed-circuit connection. While if the
switch is turned off, the electric current will not flow because the circuit
is break, thus, making it an open-circuit connection.
4. Load
This is a device or appliance that is using electricity such as light
bulb or lamps, television, refrigerator, washing machine, iron and other
gadgets you are using at home.

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1: Name the Circuit Parts

Direction: Read each item carefully and choose the correct answer on the box
below. Write your answer on the blank.

Closed Circuit Source of energy Switch

Electric Circuit Open Circuit Conductor

_______________1. It is a path where electricity flows from the source of energy

passing through the electric conductors down to the load.

_______________2. A kind of electrical circuit where current flows in a complete

electrical connection.

_______________3. Part of the electrical circuit that breaks the flow of electricity

to pass through from the source of energy to the load.

_______________4. It is where the energy is coming from.

_______________5. It is an electrical circuit where electrons could not flow due

to a break in the line.

ACTIVITY 2: Draw the symbols.

Directions: Illustrate the electrical symbols for the following parts of the
simple electric circuit. Draw your answer on the box opposite each item.

Connection is this?
VALUING

Directions: Read and understand each situation carefully. Then choose the
letter of the correct answer and write it on the blank.

__________1. After the electrician installed electrical wiring in your house,

there are some strips of wire left in your room. What are you going

to do with these wires?

A. Throw the strips of wire the trash can.

B. Put the strips of wire in your neighbor’s yard.
C. Collect the strips of wire so you could sell it in the junk shop.
D. Leave the strips of wire anywhere so you could find it easily if
you need.

__________2. You have learned that wires are the pathway of electricity in a

circuit. What are you going to do if the extension wire that you

are using has a scratch on it?

A. Cut all the rubber covering of the wire and still use it.

B. Soak the extension wire in the water so it will work well.

C. Just leave the scratch part because it will not hurt you
anyway.
D. Put an electrical tape on the scratch part to avoid from being
electrocuted.

__________3. Ben observed that the wirings in their house were destroyed due

to the typhoon. He knew that if the electricity come back, their

house will be burned due to short circuit. How could Ben prevent

this from happening?

A. He will rearrange the wirings in their house.

B. He will tell it to his friends and ask for help.

C. He will just look at the wirings and wait for the next event.
D. He will tell it to his parents so that his parents will report it to
the proper authority.
__________4. How are you going to save the battery life of your flashlight

especially if there is brownout in your area.

A. Avoid using the flashlight if not necessary.

B. Always turn on the flashlight to maintain the brightness of
your place.
C. Play hide and seek with your siblings and use the flashlight to
find them.
D. Do not use the flashlight even if you needed it in order to save
the battery.

__________5. What will you do to your learnings about simple circuit and its

parts?

A. Disregard it because I am not interested.

B. Stock it in my brain so that I can answer all the questions in
the test.
C. Use it to boast in front of my classmates so that they will think
that I am smart.
D. Share it with my colleagues so that they will also learn and
apply their learnings in everyday life.
