At the end of the lesson the learners

are expected to:
1. explain the cell theory;
2. create a timeline showing the historical
development of cell theory; and
3. apply the concept of cell theory in body
processes.

How Theory Develops?

As evidence from numerous investigations builds
up, a particular hypothesis may become so well
supported that scientists consider it a theory.
That is what happened with the hypothesis that
new organisms come from existing organisms.
This idea is now considered one of the major
ideas in science. In science, the word theory
applies to a well- tested explanation that unifies
a broad range of observations

In 1665 an English Scientist, Robert

Hooke, discovered cells while
looking at a thin slice of cork. He
described the cells as tiny boxes or
a honeycomb and thought that
cells only existed in plants and
fungi. In the publication of his book
“Micrographia”, he coined the
term “cellulae” which was
shortened to “cell”.

In 1673 Anton Van Leeuwenhoek, a

Dutch shopkeeper who had great
skill in crafting lenses used a
handmade microscope to observe
pond scum & discovered single-
celled organisms.
He called them “animalcules”. He
also observed blood cells from fish,
birds, frogs, dogs, and humans.

In 1838 a German Botanist,

Matthias Schleiden, concluded
that all plant parts are made of
cells.
A year after Theodor Schwann
German physiologist who was a
close friend of Schleiden, stated
that all animal tissues are
composed of cells.

In 1858 Rudolf Virchow,

German physician, after
extensive study of cellular
pathology, concluded that
cells must arise from
preexisting cells.

These findings were resulted to the proposition of

the Cell Theory which states that:
1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the basic unit of life in all living things.
3. All cells are produced by the division of pre-
existing cells.

• Anton Van Leeuwenhoek observed tiny living
organisms in drops of pond water through his simple
microscope.
• Theodor Schwann concluded that all animals are
