Memory sticks/pendrives: They store several GBs and use ssd technology. They
are connected to a computer through a USB port. They are small and portable.
Most operating systems recognize these storage media, hence no additional
software is needed to operate them. Portable flash drives are used as a form of
security. They plug in computers through USB ports known as dongles. The
computer’s software asks dongle for a encrypted validation key. Thus a person
trying to carry out software piracy would have to break the code.
Uses:
1. Transporting files between computers or used as a backup store.
2. Used as a security device to prevent software piracy (known as a dongle).

Adv:
1. Very compact and portable media.
2. Very robust.
3. No additional softwares needed to work on most computers.
4. They are not affected by magnetic fields.

DisAdv:
1. Can’t write-protect the data/files.
2. Easy to lose.
3. The user needs to remove the memory stick carefully, else will corrupt its
data.

Flash memory cards: They are the form of EEPROM technology.

Ex of memory cards:
SD cards (secure digital cards): it is a very small card with very high memory
capacity. They are used in digital video recorders, digital cameras etc.
XD cards (extreme digital cards): it’s a type of removable memory card designed
to use in digital cameras. They can be written to or read from cameras.
CFast card (compact fast card): it’s a memory card format which was developed to
allow solid state technology. It has no moving mechanical parts and doesnot need a
battery to retain data.
Uses:
1. Storing photos in digital cameras.
2. Used on mobile phone memory cards.
3. Used in MP3 players to store music files.
4. Used as a back up store in handheld computer devices.
Adv:
1. Very compact and can be easily removed and used in another device to
transfer photos etc.
2. They are robust.
Dis Adv:
1. Expensive when compared to HDD.
2. They have finite life regarding the number of times they can be read or
written to.
3. Have a lower storage capacity compared to hard disks.
