Introduction
Entrepreneurship is an important economic activity and exciting field of study. Small
entrepreneurial businesses employ a large proportion of the South African labour force. It is
quite possible that many students will work for these kinds of companies and hopefully many
will start their own ventures one day. However, we are often confronted with alarmingly high
statistics of small business failure. This module is important as graduates must understand the
potential problems that entrepreneurs need to avoid being successful.
This module covers the most important aspects of entrepreneurship. It builds on your existing
knowledge of business management and goes more in-depth on key entrepreneurial issues.
Before you start the module, you should look through all the topics for the module. We will
explore the fundamental aspects of entrepreneurship and its significance for aspiring
entrepreneurs and business enthusiasts. Throughout this course, we will delve into the diverse
facets of entrepreneurship, from understanding different types of entrepreneurial endeavours
to fostering a strong entrepreneurial mindset. We will also examine the practical application of
the entrepreneurial process and its interaction with the external environment. We will explore
critical concepts such as innovation, the importance of entrepreneurship in driving economic
growth, and the implementation of effective entrepreneurial strategies.
Additionally, we will delve into the creative process and the generation of novel business ideas,
learning how to overcome barriers to creative thinking and effectively screen and assess
promising ideas. The module will also cover the cornerstone of opportunity evaluation,
equipping you with the skills to recognise cognitive biases and evaluate business opportunities
with discernment. We will explore the strategic management process, mission statements,
SWOT analysis, and the practical aspects of strategy implementation and evaluation.
Understanding the legal aspects of entrepreneurship will be a vital component of this module,
providing you with insights into the legal requirements for different business structures and the
importance of compliance. Moreover, we will discuss ethical decision-making in business and
the significance of social responsibility for fostering a positive societal impact through
entrepreneurial ventures.
Throughout this learning journey, you will gain essential skills for effective entrepreneurial
leadership and team management, enabling you to navigate the challenges and opportunities
that arise during the early stages of business initiation and growth.
