LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 5

Friday

Lesson 45 : Dividing Whole Numbers with Quotients in Decimal Form

Week 5 Day 5

Objective : Divides whole numbers with quotients in decimal form.

Value Focus : Fairness

Prerequisite Concepts and Skills :

 Mastery on dividing decimals

 Rounding decimals

Materials : flashcards, activity cards

References : K to 12 Gr. 5 CG – M5NS – IIf – 116., LM, LG Gr.6 pp.109-111

Instructional Procedure :

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Game Relay
a. Teacher prepares flashcards with division
b. Pupils will divided into two groups with 3 members each group.
c. As the teacher flashes the card, each player will give the answer.
d. The first to give the answer correctly, will take 1 step forward.
e. The first to reach the platform, wins the game.
Ex. 30 ÷ 5 = n 2 120 ÷ 10 = n 288 ÷ 24 = n
150 ÷ 15 = n 780 ÷ 12 = n 860 ÷ 4 = n

2. Review
Game Relay
Teacher prepares activity cards.
Mechanics
1. Divide the class into 2 with 5 members each group.
2. Place equal stacks of cards with identical problems.
3. As the teacher says “ Go “ the first player for each team goes to the board and
solves the first problem on the first card.
4. As soon as the first player is finished, the second player takes the next card and
solves the problem correctly.
5. The team that got the most number of correct answer declared a winner.
Example :
1. Darwin will cut strips of paper 0.25 dm wide from a sheet 1.50dm wide. How
many strips of paper will he have?
2. A nutritionist poured 0.70 L of honey into 14 L plastic cups. Find the number
of plastic cups filled.
3. A rectangular rice field is 0.40 km wide and has an area of2.80 sq. km. Find
the length of the field.
4. A city government plans to put streetlights along its 88 km main road. The
streetlights are to be placed 0.22 km apart. How many streetlights will the city
government need?
5. A bamboo pole 0.80 m long was cut into pieces, each 0.05 of a meter long.
How many pieces of bamboo were there?

3. Motivation
How many are you in the family?
Have you experienced bringing home something which is not enough for your family?
What did you do?
How did you share it equally to everyone?

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation

Group Activity( Group of 4 )

Ana brought home 3 suman. If she has 4 sisters, how will she divide it equally among
her sisters?

a. Task for each group

1. Use strips of paper to represent the 3 suman.
2. Divide each strip into 4 equal parts.
3. Give one piece to each member of the group. Do the same with the other strips.
4. Answer the following :
a. What do you call each part? ( ¼ )
b. How many fourths did each one receive? ( 3 )
c. How do you change ¾ to decimal?
( by multiplying both terms by 25; that is, 3 x 25 = 75; 4 x 25 = 100 )
d. How will you write 75 and 100 in fraction form? ( 75 / 100 )
e. How is 75 / 100 written in decimal form? ( 0.75 )
f. What is the quotient of 3 ÷ 4 ?
g. Show your solution.

2. Performing the Activities

Read, analyze and solve the problem.

A dressmaker has a bolt of fabric that is 49 meters long. She plans to make 50 table
runners. How long will each piece be?

a. What is asked in the problem?

b. What are given?
c. What operation will you use to solve it?
d. Write the number sentence.
e. What is your answer ? Show your solution.

3. Processing the Activities

How did you find the activity ? How were you able to find the answer to the problem?
Discuss with the pupils the steps in dividing whole numbers by whole numbers with
decimal quotients?

4. Reinforcing the Concept and Skill

a. Discuss the presentation under “ Explore and Discover “ in LM.
b. For more practice, Have the pupils work on “ Get Moving “
c. Ask the pupils to work on the exercises under “ Keep Moving “

5. Summarizing the Lesson

Lead the pupils to give the following generalization by asking :
How do we divide whole numbers with decimal quotients?

In dividing whole numbers with a decimal quotients :

 divisor must be bigger than its dividend
 write the equation in fraction form, dividend as numerator and divisor as
denominator
 divide numerator by its denominator, since numerator is smaller than
denominator it can’t be divided
 add zero to the numerator but before that add a decimal point before zero
 quotient must then have a decimal point.

6. Applying to New and Other Situations

Ask the pupils to solve problems under “ Apply Your Skills “ in LM.

C. Assessment
1. Find the quotient. Round your answer to the nearest place value indicated.
Tenths Hundredths
a. 5 ÷ 6 _______________ _________________
b. 12 ÷ 18 _______________ _________________
c. 15 ÷ 80 _______________ _________________
d. 16 ÷ 18_______________ _________________
e. Solve :
Tina has a 19 m of ribbon. She has 20 friends who want to have a piece of ribbon. How

long will each one have ?

D. Home Activity
Remediation
Find the quotient. Round answers to the nearest place value indicated.
Tenths Hundredths
a. 7 ÷ 8 _______________ _________________
b. 11 ÷ 13 _______________ _________________

c. 15 ÷ 48 _______________ _________________
d. 12 ÷ 25 _______________ _________________
e. Solve :

A 24 meter string is to be divided into 30 pieces. How long will each be ?

Enrichment

Solve for N.
1. 25 ÷ 50 = N
2. 56 ÷ 58 = N
3. 72 ÷ 74 = N
4. 99 ÷ 100 = N
5. Solve : A piece of string is 372 dm long. How many pieces of 2.5 dm long can be cut from
it?
