Summarize, Analyze, and Reflect on a poem “Hands”

Watch Sarah Kay's "Hands", which tells a story about Sarah Kay and her father.
Observe everything carefully in order to describe it in an introductory paragraph.

Summarizing
1. Describe the story. Start with surface description: who, where, what, and other detailed descriptions of Sarah and
the setting. DO NOT DISCUSS TOO MANY DETAILS ABOUT HER MESSAGE.
2. Write several sentences introducing Sarah.
3. Watch Sarah Kay's "Hands” again and write several sentences summarizing the main ideas in the story.
This will be body paragraph 1. (e.g. Sarah Kay’s “Hands” is about…)

Analyzing
1. What can you tell about the relationship between Sarah and her father?
2. Kay says, “Hands learn, more than minds do.” What do you think she means?
3. What evidence can you find that Kay supports peace, not war? Try to remember a specific line or two in the story.
This will be body paragraph 2.

Reflection Activity
1. Describe how this poem made you feel.
2. Can you connect it to anyone in your life or to any experiences you have had? Give details.
This will become body paragraph 3.
3. Finish your story with a concluding paragraph.

Write your story in the box below to copy/paste it into Moodle assignment space later.
