This cardigan is made from the top down with a raglan style yoke, then joining the yarn to

make the sleeves and button bands. Each size is written separately with the bottom

pattern, rib edging and button bands written in the notes for all sizes.

This size guide for lengths is just a guide, as all children are different it’s always
best to measure the individual you are making for, to get the perfect fit.

sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)
hhdc = herringbone half double crochet (herringbone half treble crochet UK)
Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook) pull first loop
straight through the second (similar to a slip stitch). Yarn over, pull through two remaining
loops on hook.
dec = decrease (crochet two stitches together)
ps = puff stitch (insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, *yarn over, insert hook into same
stitch, pull up a loop* x 3, (8 loops on hook) yarn over pull through 8 loops, ch1 to finish
blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch
ch = chain
slst = slip stitch

Pattern notes and photos

● Working in the first stitch the ch1 does not count as a stitch so always ch1

and hhdc or sc in the first stitch.

● The ch1 on the increases are counted in the stitch count.

● My example is a newborn size.

● The bottom pattern and rib edging measures approximately 2.25”.

● You could add more rows of puff stitch before the ribbing if you make the

cardigan shorter.

● If you want the rib edging longer add more chains.

● The bottom edging, cuffs and button bands are written for all sizes in this

section.

● The buttonholes can be made at either side.

● The buttonholes can be made with a ch1 for smaller buttons, or a ch2 for

20mm buttons.

 ● If you want to make the cuffs a bit tighter, when doing the ribbing, slst 3

stitches a few times instead of 2.

● On the bigger sizes or if you want to use bigger buttons, the button bands

can be done with two more rows (5 rows total) making the buttonholes on row

3 and chaining 2 for the buttonholes.

Ribbed Collar (all sizes)

Using a 3.5mm hook

Row 1: ch6, sc in the second ch from hook, sc 4. (5) Turn

Row 2: (in blo) ch1, sc all. (5) Turn

Repeat row 2 for the number of rows indicated on the size you are making.

Once completed the correct number of rows, the first row will be worked along the

ribbing (each row will be classed as 1 stitch)

Dividing for armholes

hhdc the required amount of stitches for the front skip required amount of stitches this will
form the first armhole, work the required amount of stitches for the back, skip the required
amount of stitches to form the second armhole and work to the end.

Using a 4mm hook

Row 1: ch1, sc in the same, ps, *skip 1, ps* repeat to last stitch, sc 1. Turn

Buttonhole band (All sizes)

Using a 3.5mm hook

With front facing join yarn at the top right

Row 1: ch1, sc in the same, sc down to the bottom. Turn

Mark out with stitch markers or scraps of yarn where you would like the button

holes to be.

Row 2: ch1, sc in the same, sc all (ch1 and skip 1 where the markers are). Turn

Row 3: ch1, sc in the same, sc all including the ch1s.

Fasten off.

Sew buttons at the other side to match up with the buttonholes.

Sleeves

Start the sleeves by joining yarn under arm, ch1, hhdc in each stitch, (under the arm along

the side of hhdc) add extra stitches to get the right count for the size you are making, (this

also prevents a gap under the arm)
