 What are the classes and
curricula like?
Consider weighing the differ-
ences between core and open
curricula. In a core curriculum
approach, every student is re-
quired to take a certain num-
ber of classes from a broad
range of disciplines. Some say
this provides a well-rounded
learning experience and can
be helpful for students who
aren’t quite sure what they’re
most interested in studying as
a major.
In contrast, while an open
curriculum requires that each
student complete a certain
number of credits in order to
graduate, the course options
are much more flexible. Fans
of this approach argue that
students who have greater au-
tonomy in picking their courses
will be more invested in their
learning. An open curriculum is
perfect for students who have
a clear vision of what they want
from their college academic ex-
perience. You’ll find examples
of great institutions that prac-
tice one or the other, but one
might be better for you.

Leadership
Isn’t For Later How to learn and use this important skill now.

BY S E A N ST R E H LOW

ou’ve likely been encouraged to be a leader by your teachers,
parents, and other authority figures who are invested in your
success. Leadership has become an increasingly popular ed-
ucational outcome for high school and college students. At
the university where I teach, part of our mission is to “develop
young men and women for worldwide leadership and service.” Consider
the missions of a few other universities:

“to prepare creative, ethically minded leaders”

“assume roles of leadership”
“engage in community with others, discern life purpose, and grow
in leadership”

Leadership is popular. But what does it mean and why is it important?

These were questions that guided the courses I taught within Baylor
University’s leadership studies minor. Ronald Heifetz, a professor of pub-
lic leadership at Harvard University, writes that “when we lead, we are
mobilizing people to solve complex problems and help others thrive.”
For current and prospective college students, leadership might seem like
a daunting task. However, there are several small steps you can take im-
mediately that will get you well on your way to becoming a great leader.
It all starts with learning, leaning in, and looking around.

In addition to studying our own internal devel-

for emerging opment, becoming a leader requires learning

how to interact well with others. As it happens,

student leaders college is the ideal place and time to hone these
interpersonal skills by investing in a variety of
relationships. Start by finding a group of peers.
Although this seems like an obvious first step,
finding the right friends will require courage
and perseverance as you continue to learn more
about yourself.
When I talk to students about their personal
development throughout college, they often de-
scribe what I call the friendship funnel.

Friendship Funnel:
Freshman year: Students arrive on
campus ready for a slew of experiences.
They’re proactive about meeting people
and branching out.

Sophomore year: Most students keep

trying new things, but they also start to
settle in, prioritizing deeper relationships
and building meaningful community.

Junior year: Students are deep into their

degree coursework, so they focus less
energy on new things and more energy
on experiences that matter to them.

Senior year: Students start to mentally

prepare for life after college, solidifying
their activities and their core group of
friends. Here, relationships and ex-
periences become deeper and more
meaningful.

Here’s what the funnel teaches us: (1) Getting

involved means taking some risks, (2) You’ll
probably move from new to meaningful over
time, and that’s good, and (3) Finding meaning-
ful and lasting friendships requires some invest-
ment. Enjoy every stage!

BuildING
Friendships
That last
Know what you need and find your people.

avigating friendships can
be hard. And good! But
definitely hard.
Despite its challenges,
creating a community at
college doesn’t have to be com-
plicated. You’re still going to have
people who make you laugh, find
an activity you love doing with oth-
ers, and build a group of friends
who, hopefully, feel like family.
Developing healthy relationship
skills will help you find a greater
sense of belonging wherever you
end up during your college years.
Belonging isn’t a feeling,
though. Belonging is a choice.

Diving Deeper into Friendship

As an emerging college stu-
dent, I committed to investing
in friendships more intentionally
than I ever had. Friendships had
naturally occurred in high school,
but I wanted something deeper than
their shallow, hot-and-cold nature. I
was on a mission to find my people.
Healthy relationships don’t just
happen. I had to actively pursue
them and follow through on my
commitments. I also had to be-
come a good listener and a ques-
tion-asker, risking vulnerability by
allowing myself to be known. I had
to learn how to care deeply about
other people while also caring
deeply about myself.
If that sounds like a lot of work,
you’re right. It was. Healthy rela-
tionships require effort and inten-
tionality, but they are always worth
it. Relationships, after all, have the
potential to be one of the most
rewarding aspects of our lives,
and college is a great time to dive
deeper into these important rela-
tional rhythms.

Choosing
the Right path
For You
SPOILER ALERT: It might not be college.

BY M O R G A N ST R E H LOW

What kind of person do you want to be?

Do you really need to go to college to be this person,

T
here are countless ways to build a satisfying life and professional
career—and higher education is only one of many pathways you
can take in the search for meaning, purpose, and vocation.
While it’s true that a degree can improve your future earning
potential and professional opportunities, more and more people
are realizing that higher education may not be the best choice for them.
Choosing to attend a college or university, however, still offers unique ex-
periences and invaluable personal development. There are advantages to
furthering your education, but there are also many reasons it may not be
an essential part of your specific journey.
To determine whether college is worth it for you, ask yourself a few
important questions that can help you decide.
