CONTENT OF THE TOPIC

A house is a building in which people live. It usually has several rooms which
serve different purposes. Examples of parts of a house are the bedrooms, the
living room, the kitchen, pantry, toilet, bathroom, study and corridors.
Types of houses

1. Primitive houses. Primitive houses are simple, and do not have modern
facilities that would make them comfortable. They are, however, habitable.
They include:

a) Caves. Sometimes, primitive people in rocky environments carve out

houses for themselves from the rocks.
b) Mud houses. Mud houses are found mainly in African countries and
other developing countries. Mud is the major building material. Often mud
houses have thatched roofs or zinc roofs. Mud houses can be durable if well
built.

c) Huts. A hut is a small simple building with only one or two rooms. It is
usually built with mud or wood. Huts are usually found in rural
communities.
d) House boats. In some riverine areas, where housing is scarce and
expensive, people live on house boats. Examples of places where house boats
can be found are China and Hong Kong.

e) Houses on stilts. In some riverine areas and places that get flooded often,
people raise their houses off the water on stilts. Such houses can be found in
parts of Balyesa, Rivers, and Delta States and in some parts of Lagos (on the
Lagoon). They can also be found in places like Papua New Guinea
andCambodia.
f) Tents. Usually, tents are made of thick cloth or animal hide supported with
poles and branches. Tents can be removed and taken to other locations.
Some nomadic tribes in North Africa and East Africa live in tents.

Modern House

Modern houses are built using recent designs, recent materials and recent
technology. They are far more attractive and comfortable than primitive
houses. Modern houses can often be found in large towns and cities. They are
built with cement and concrete. They have glass windows, refined wooden
doors (as well as metal doors and gates). The toilets, bathrooms and kitchens
are within the houses. Examples of modern houses include the:

a) Bungalow

b) Storey building
c) Duplex

d) Triplex

e) Quadruplex
f) Block of flats

g) Mansion
Getting More People To Own Houses

1 Parents and teachers should teach children to learn to save part of their
money regularly, so that over a period of time, they will have enough
money to acquire their own houses.
2 People should make an investigation on how to take advantage of
the different housing schemes which the government has set up.
3 Government should establish more housing schemes and operate them
in such a way that people can pay by installments over a period of time.

4 Government and non-governmental organizations should assist

rural dwellers to build simple houses.
5 Government should advertise its various housing schemes, so that
more people will know about them and take advantage of them.
6 Banks and mortgage institutions, that have favorable housing schemes,
should advertise their arrangements widely so that people can patronize
them. The conditions must not be so harsh as to discourage people from
getting loans from them.
7 Government should plan cities, towns and villages properly and provide
social amenities everywhere, so that people will find almost everywhere
desirable to live in. This will make houses cheaper than they are now in
the
cities.

8 Government should ensure that those who manufacture and sell

building materials sell at affordable prices, so that more people can buy
them.
9 Government should encourage the use of cheaper local building

CONTENT OF THE TOPIC

Values are those ideas which we, as members of society, have about what is
right and what is wrong. A society without values will be chaotic and
eventually get destroyed. Values keep a society decent, progressive, safe and
attractive. Generally, the values relevant to house construction are those
values which we must possess as members of society. They include:
1 Honesty
2 Cooperation
3 Self reliance
4 Unity
5 Tolerance
6 Love
7 Respect
8 Peace
9 Humility
10 Happiness
11 Freedom
12 Responsibility
13 Discipline
14 Hard work
15 Respect for quality, and accountability

1 Honesty (accountability, accuracy). Builders, property developers,

bricklayers, building materials merchants and all those involved in the
construction of houses, must be honest. They should use materials of high
quality.
2 Self reliance (hard work, skill and discipline). Nigeria has many qualified
people in the construction industry. Some of them are engineers,
electricians, bricklayers, builders, surveyors, architects and plumbers. They
should work hard and use their skills to construct good houses.
3 Cooperation and unity. At construction sites, all workers should
cooperate in order to construct good houses for the people.
4 Tolerance, love, respect and peace. When we love others, we would treat
them the way we want them to treat us. Builders and construction workers
should show love for the owner of the house by being honest in the way they
handle the construction of the house.
5 Happiness. Construction workers should do their work with joy. Also,
those in charge should keep the workers happy by paying them well and
promptly

Services refer to those things which are officially provided by the government
for everyone in a country. Government’s main services include these:
1 Maintenance of peace and security. The police force is the main agency of
government which protects lives and property. The police maintain peace
in society.

2 Maintenance of law and order. The government ensures that people

obey the laws of the country, so that things can work in an orderly way.
3 Justice and equity. Government ensures that people get justice
whenever they have a problem. It does this by establishing different
courts, and employing lawyers and judges. When people have a problem
with other people, they can go to court and get fair judgment.
4 Defense. Government defends the country against her enemies. The armed
forces are directly in charge of defense. They protect Nigeria against
aggression from other countries. The armed forces are made up of the
army, the air force and the navy.

5 Educations. Government ensures that there are good schools for children
and even adults to attend. It makes sure that the teachers work in the
schools, and that they get paid.
6 Health care. Government provides hospitals that are equipped with gadgets
for health care. It also employs qualified health care providers such as doctors,
nurses, pharmacists and laboratory scientists to look after the health of those
who are sick.
7 Water. Government makes available potable water to prevent diseases.
Pipe borne water is very important for use at home and in industries.

8 Electricity
9 Good roads
10 Transportation
11 Communication
12 Streetlights
Quality of services provided by Government

1 Accountability. People in government should realise that they are

serving their country, and be ready to give the citizens an account of their
services. 2 Transparency. The government should not be secretive in the
way it
operates, because the country belongs to all citizens. Nigerians should be made
to know how money is being spent to make the services work.
3 Time consciousness. Those who work in different agencies that provide
the services should arrive their work places early and regularly.
4 Dedication, faithfulness and integrity. Government officials should be
dedicated to their work. They should be faithful and loyal to the
government in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Types of services Provided by government

Consequences of poor services

1 Lack of trust. The citizens will be dissatisfied and will not trust
the government any more.

2 High costs of living. Private individuals would provide some of those services,
and charge high rates on them. A good example is electricity. Many people
now buy generators and petrol to provide electricity at home and in the
factories.

3 An ineffective work force. If teachers, for instance, are not paid, they will
find it difficult to teach. Also, if the police are unpaid, they will not be
willing to protect the people.

4 Disorganization and confusion. People will be unruly if government

services are poor. When the roads are bad, drivers may not obey traffic rules
and regulations. If government hospitals do not work, people would be forced
to patronize quacks, and may eventually lose their lives.

5 Insecurity. When streetlights do not work, for instance, or when there is

power outage, thieves could easily hide and operate at night in the affected
areas.
6 Anarchy and frustration. When people are frustrated because of
poor services, they may go on strike or riot

Why government is unable to provide services

1 Population increase. Many government facilities can no longer serve the
people, because when such facilities were first provided, Nigerians were not
as many as they are now. With the increase in population, such facilities are
overstretched. So they can no longer meet the needs of the people. Such
facilities include universities, hospitals, and electricity transformers.
2 Insensitivity. Some government officials are very lazy and insensitive to
the feelings of their fellow citizens. Many of them do not go to work every
day.
Some go to work very late and may not do any satisfactory work.
3 Corruption. Some government officials are corrupt. Money meant for the
provision of services is sometimes diverted to personal use. When such
officials are caught, they should be tried in court and, if found guilty, sent to
jail to serve as a deterrent to others.
4 Inadequate planning. Some of our leaders have failed to take population
increase into consideration. As a result, they make plans for only those
that are available at planning time. This is inadequate planning.
5 Lack of maintenance culture. Some of the equipment with which
government services are rendered are obsolete, because they were not
maintained over the years, nor were they replaced with new ones when
appropriate.

Helping the government to provide services

These are some of the ways we can help the government to provide services:
1 Everyone should pay their taxes regularly.
2 People should promptly pay bills and rates, e.g. water rate and
electricity bills.
3 When children attend government schools, their parents should pay
any official development levies imposed on pupils.
4 Those who undertake government contracts should be honest, and
provide high quality service, and supply the right kind of materials which
they have been contracted to supply.
5 Communities should organize self help programmes, for example
provision of boreholes, pipe borne water and community clinics.
6 Non-governmental organizations can be set up to help the less privileged in
society, in order to reduce the number of those who look up to government
to care for them

CONTENT OF THE TOPIC

Natural disasters are caused by the forces of nature, while man-made disasters

are caused by human beings or even animals, and are accidental.
Difference between natural disasters and unnatural disasters

Man-made/Unnatural disasters include

1 Fire accidents.

2 Transport accidents of various kinds (air, road, water, etc.)

3 Collapsed mines. Miners may get trapped underground, especially
when there is an explosion when they are working, and may die there.
4 Chemical accidents. A chemical accident could occur if, for instance, gas
pipes are not well laid. So the gas may leak and kill humans and animals
that inhale the polluted air.

Natural disasters may be caused by the following:

1 An avalanche. This occurs when a large mass of snow, ice or rocks fall down
the side of a mountain.
2 Blizzards. These are produced by a period of very cold weather when
there is snow.

3 Cyclones. Cyclones are caused by very strong winds that move very fast in
a circle.
4 Droughts. This occurs when there is lack of rain for a long time in a place.
As a result, there wouldn’t be enough water for plants and animals to live
on.

5 Earthquakes. Earthquakes are caused by a sudden shaking of the

earth. Houses collapse and kill or injure those around.

6 Floods. A flood is a very large amount of water, which covers an area that
is normally dry. Floods are usually caused by heavy rainfall. They can occur
when a river overflows its banks, thereby spreading to dry areas.
7 Hail. This occurs when rain falls in the form of hard balls of ice.

8 Hurricane. This occurs when terrible storms produce strong, fast winds that
move over water.

9 Landslides. A landslide is the sudden fall of a lot of earth or rocks down a

hill.
10 Lightning. This is a powerful flash of light in the sky. It usually
happens during storms, and is followed by thunder.

11 Tornadoes. A tornado is a very violent storm, which is made up of air

that spins very fast.
12 Volcanic eruptions. These occur when a hot substance known as lava (or
molten magma) suddenly erupts from the earth. Molten magma is
extremely hot, dangerous, and moves with speed.

.
13 Tsunamis. These are very terrible sea waves which cause terrible
damage. They can be caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions that take
place under the sea.
14 Wild fires. They occur suddenly and spread very quickly. They happen
in the forest, and can sometimes be caused by lightning
