Your “Words of Welcome” message contains answers to three FAQs.

● What should I expect each week?

● What is the difference between CMN 432 and CCMN 432?
● Are there textbooks or additional resources to purchase?
● What do I do to prepare for Class #1?

NOTE: Everything you need to successfully complete our course will be posted. Go through the
announcements and lecture notes carefully as detailed (and specific) instructions will be provided.

Careful reading is required to ensure your success -- you may need review the messages more than
once and make notes. This is normal: learning takes time. It’s part of the process -- for everyone.

Discussion: Why is objectivity (being neutral)

important in technical communication?
Prevents bias, hear both sides, bias can influence others,
helps separate truth from falsehood (or even propaganda),
helps with getting accurate information across, let the reader
form their own opinion and build trust, separate personal
emotions from facts, affects validity of arguments, logical and
level-headed, minimize misinterpretation, helps prevent an
individual from saying something that they will regret later

Let’s work together to define the following terms.

Context: environment/situation
→ when we begin a report, it’s always a good idea to mention
the context as the reader may have forgotten about it

Encoding: “package” the information

Decoding: “unpacking” the information

Noise: barriers to communication

Example Question #2
Discuss the punctuation error in the following sentence. (2 Marks)
“Molly successfully submitted the bid, she informed her group.”
