Introduction
AASP has adopted the European Sports Charter definition of sport.
"Sport" means all forms of physical activity which, through casual or organized
participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being,
forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels.
In recent decades, sport as a social practice has become relevant in many different
fields: in health, economy, politics, education, work and leisure. The importance of sport
transcends the confines of the sports field. Sport involves not only organization but also
organizing. Sport is about organizing collective efforts and performance. Sport is about
managing excellence, coaching and developing tactics as well as strategies. Sport also
has its own mechanisms of organizing social differences. The competitive aspects of sport
imply practices of in- and exclusion. These practices are enacted spatially on the sports
field, dividing space between competing teams and individual sportsmen and
sportswomen.

In a broader sense, this theme touches upon the issue of access and socially
marginalized identities. Sport deals with contradictions and paradoxes that exist in society
at large. Sport is ‘contested terrain’ (Bourdieu 1988), an arena in which social and political
differences are being played.

What is Sports?

Etymologically, the term sport comes from the Old French desport meaning
leisure. American English uses the term sports to refer to this general recreational
activity, whereas other regional dialects use the singular sport. The Persian word for sport
is based on the root word bord, meaning winning. The Chinese term for sport,
tiyu connotes physical training. The Modern Greek term for sport is athlitismos,

directly cognate with the English terms’ athlete and athleticism. As defined in Wikipedia
Dictionary, sport is an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring
commitment, strategy, and play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means. It
is governed by a set of rules or customs.

Yahoo Reference Dictionary defined sport as an activity involving physical exertion

and skill governed by a group of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
The oldest definition of sport in English (1300) is of anything humans find amusing or
entertaining. Roget’s (1995) defines the noun sport as an activity for relaxation and
amusement synonymous with diversion and recreation. Lumpkin (1998) defined sports as
physical activities governed by formal and informal rules that involve competition
against an opponent or oneself and are engaged in for fun, recreation, or reward.

Moreover, sport also pertains to lifetime activity for some people. Individuals
engage in the sport as part of their leisure and/or recreation. Activity can be vigorous
and competitive or mild and recreational, depending on the sport. Hence, the term Sport
refers to a highly organized competitive physical skill activity with rules and regulations.

Some activities requiring skills such as air performance, board games, card games,
wheels-racing, and water-boat racing are likewise categorized as sports only
if recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Non-competitive activities, such as
jogging, playing like throwing and catching, leisure dancing, doing arts and
crafts, nature-trip activities are usually classified as forms of recreation. The term
recreation here is defined as any leisure activity that is enjoyable, meaningful, and non-
obligatory to the person involved done during his/her available time.
