Purpose of Assessment:

The key purpose of this assessment is to have students develop skills in:

- Independent investigation and research

- Engagement with critical materials
- Development of analytical research skills and communication skills

An additional outcome of this task will be to provide students with some evidence to inform their
decision about taking Extension 2 English in Year 12.
Description of Task:

There are three parts to this assessment:

A) Students will write a 2000 word academic essay on the following question:
Evaluate how your film text paralleled, challenged or offered an alternative view on ONE key value
established in the original text.
To complete this you will need to establish how the original text has represented the value and then compare that
to the way the same value has been represented in the film.

B) Logbook Completion. Students will be required to maintain a logbook detailing their

research, learning and process throughout this project. The Logbook is not allocated a
mark (as is the case with Extension 2 in Year 12) but it is a compulsory element of the
project and you will not be deemed to have submitted your task without its effective
completion and submission.

C) VIVA VOCE – students will complete a Viva Voce on their research. This is an in-person
discussion between the student and the markers, where the markers will ask questions
about the work completed. Students will be given the focus questions and have 10 minutes
to make some notes, then they will discuss their work with the markers for a maximum of
15 minutes. The questions will guide the discussion but the teachers may ask clarifying
questions to support student responses. Students will be permitted to have a pen and their
logbooks when preparing and completing the Viva Voce. Laptops will NOT be permitted.

 During Term 1 and 2, and the start of Term 3, you will have an indicative 1 period per
