Ashok Leyland, established in 1948, stands as a cornerstone of the Indian automotive industry,
renowned for its expertise in manufacturing commercial vehicles and related solutions.
Rooted in a set of core values emphasizing integrity, innovation, and sustainability, the
company's mission is to deliver superior quality, reliable, and innovative transportation
solutions that meet the evolving needs of its customers. Leveraging advanced manufacturing
facilities and a diverse product portfolio encompassing trucks, buses, and specialized vehicles,
Ashok Leyland caters to various sectors globally, supported by a commitment to sustainability
and environmental stewardship. With a focus on continuous improvement and customer-
centricity, Ashok Leyland remains a leader in the commercial vehicle segment, poised for
further growth and success both domestically and internationally.
Introduction:

On February 23rd, 2024, a group of first-year MBA students from VIT Business School embarked on
an industrial visit to the Ashok Leyland Phase 1 manufacturing plant located in Sipcot Industrial
Complex, Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The objective of the visit was to gain practical knowledge about the
manufacturing process and support activities involved in commercial vehicle production. Ashok
Leyland, a leading producer of commercial vehicles in India, operates three plants in Tamil Nadu,
with two in Hosur and one in Ennore.

Visit Overview:

The industrial visit commenced with a presentation about the company at the Human Resource
Development center. The presentation covered the company's values, mission, capabilities, and
manufacturing procedures, followed by a session for clarifying doubts. The students were then
divided into two groups for a closer observation of the production process under the supervision of a
representative from the HRD department.
Visit Highlights:

1. Shop 2 - Engine Assembly:

The visit began with Shop 2, where the bottom end of the engine is assembled. Approximately
70% of the processes in this shop are automated using conveyor belts and robots. Raw materials for
this assembly unit are received from the Ennore unit every two to three days. The estimated output
per shift is 52 units, with one process completed every 5 minutes.

2. Shop 1 - All Women Production Line:

Shop 1 is India's first all-women production line, specializing in the production of engines for small
commercial vehicles. The shop includes a short-term warehouse known as the engine dispatch area.
Fully produced engines are then transferred to warehouses using lifters.

3. Shop 5 - Engine Body Casting:

This shop provided insights into engine body casting processes. Apart from automobile engines, the
plant also produces non-commercial engines for Ashok Leyland's power solution business.
Additionally, there is a re-conditioning center onsite.

Conclusion:

The industrial visit to Ashok Leyland's Phase 1 manufacturing plant provided valuable practical
knowledge about the automotive engine manufacturing process. The students gained insights into
various aspects of production, automation, and logistics involved in the commercial vehicle
manufacturing industry.
