WORKSHEET 2 - CURRENT ELECTRICITY (1-04-2023)

1. Using Kirchhoff’s rules determine the value of unknown resistance R in the circuit so that
no current flows through 4 ohm resistance. Also find the potential difference between A and
D.

2. Using Kirchhoff’s rules, calculate the current in the arm AC of the given circuit.

3. The network PQRS, shown in the circuit diagram, has the batteries of 4 V and 5 V
and negligible internal resistance. A milliammeter of 20 ohm resistance is connected
between P and R. Calculate the reading in the milliammeter .
4. A uniform wire of resistance 48 ohm is cut into three pieces so that the ratio of the
resistances R1 : R2 : R3 = 1 : 2 : 3 and the three pieces are connected to form a triangle
across which a cell of emf 8 V and internal resistance 1 ohm is connected as shown.
Calculate the current through each part of the circuit.

5. Using Kirchhoff’s rules, calculate the potential difference between B and D in the circuit
diagram as shown in the figure.

6. Calculate the value of the resistance R in the circuit shown in the figure so that the current
in the circuit is 0.2A. What would be the potential difference between points B and E?
7. Determine the current in each branch of the network shown in figure:

8.

9. (a) A set of n equal resistors of value R each are connected in series to a battery of emf E and
internal resistance R. The current drawn is I. Now, the n resistors are connected in parallel to the same
battery. Then the current drawn from battery becomes 10 I. Calculate the value of n.

(b) Two cells of same emf E but of different internal resistance r 1 and r 2 are connected in
series with an external resistance R. What should be the value of R so that the potential drop
across the first cell becomes zero ?
(c) A cylindrical metallic wire is the stretched to increase its length by 10%. Calculate the
percentage increase in its resistance.
(d) A metal rod of square cross-sectional area A having length I has current I flowing
through it when a potential difference of V volt is applied across its ends (figure ii). What
potential difference must be maintained across the length 2I so that the current in the rod is
still I?

10. (a) Two metallic wires of the same material have the same length but cross sectional area is in
the ratio 1 : 2. They are connected (i) in series and (ii) in parallel. Compare the drift velocities of
electrons in the two wires in both the cases (i) and (ii).
(b)Two metallic resistors are connected first in series and then in parallel across a d c supply. Plot
of I –V graph is shown for the two cases. Which one represents a parallel combination of the
resistors and why?

(c) I – V graph for two identical conductors of different materials A and B is shown in the figure.
Which one of the two has higher resistivity?

(d) Figure shows two circuits each having a galvanometer and a battery of 3 V. When the
galvanometers in each arrangement do not show any deflection, obtain the ratio R 1 / R 2
(e) Calculate the current drawn from the battery in the given network.

(f) The given circuit represents a balanced Wheatstone’s bridge. Calculate the value of resistance x.
