Health problems ranging from a mild headache to severe cognitive impairment can
result from exposure to air pollution. A pollutant’s capacity to affect health depends on
many factors, such as proximity of the person to the pollutant, age of the person
exposed, and duration of his or her exposure. Reactions to pollutants vary among
individuals, but patterns of ill health─particularly when experienced by an entire family
in a home or by multiple workers in an office building─may be an aid in diagnosing
the condition and resolving the problem. However, the phenomenon of “sick building
syndrome” (in which a large number of workers or residents report symptoms like
headache or sore throat but no physical cause can be found) shows that diagnosis is not
always easy or even possible.
According to the categories established for diagnostic evaluation by the American
Medical Association, indoor air pollutants can be classified into the following groups:
combustion products, biological pollutants, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals.
Any of these categories could be further broken down according to several bases. For
example, biological pollutants could be classified according to their pathogenicity—their

pollutants. Which is NOT included in any of the four?
① tobacco smoke ② organic folic acid

In the U.K., dog thefts increased 170% from 2019 to 2020, according to DogLost,
which works to reunite lost dogs with their owners. So far in 2021, at least 106 dogs
have been reported stolen, compared with 55 by this time last year, says K. Harding,
the group’s police liaison. It’s more difficult to track pet-theft patterns in the U.S.,
where no major advocacy group or law-enforcement agency collects data. The American
Kennel Club and Adopt-a-Pet.com say their evidence of an increase is anecdotal, but pet
detectives, both amateur and professional, say there’s been an obvious rise in the past
year.
Because pets are lawfully viewed as personal property nationwide, people who steal
them have relatively little to lose. Pet thefts are mostly considered misdemeanors, and
the punishment is similar to the consequences of _______________. It varies by state,
but if the perpetrator has no prior criminal history, the penalty is typically a small fine
and little to no jail time.

23. Which is the most appropriate for the blank?

① stealing someone’s couch
② kidnapping a baby
③ deliberately killing a person
④ committing a felony

24. According to the passage, which is true?

① Missing-dog cases in the U.S. are much less serious than those in the U.K.
② In the U.S., there have been reports of substantial decrease in dog theft in recent
years.
③ Stealing dogs in the U.S. is currently treated under property theft laws.
④ Dogs are like members of the family, so dog thieves in the U.S. are punished
accordingly.

One of the first decisions many people make in the morning is what to wear. Our
clothes make a statement about our individual style and beliefs; they can also say
something about our musical tastes, or our cultural identity. Fashion trends change not
only with the seasons but also annually, with new styles being introduced, as well as
old ones revived, on the catwalks of Paris, Milan, London, and New York. Looking
back at changes in clothing styles over the past few decades, it seems that fashion
trends tend to occur in cycles. What was fashionable twenty years ago, for example,
may come back into fashion again in the near future.
One particular style popular in the 2000s was the ‘retro’ look. Many young people
chose to dress in clothing styles of the 1970s and 1980s, or combined different elements
of these past fashions with modern trends. Of course, there are people who adopt certain
styles all the time, not just when fashion gurus dictate it is appropriate. Fans of a
particular type of music, for example, will always wear the clothes that match the
music. The punk movement in London in the 1980s saw many people with spiky hair,
dressed in black; nowadays people who are fans of the music still _______________.

25. Which is the most appropriate example for the underlined part?
① spiky hair ② ‘retro’ look
③ catwalks ④ fashion gurus

26. Which is the most appropriate for the blank?

① pursue the new trend in fashion as well as in music
② adopt the same matching clothing and hair style
③ wear the unique style unrelated to his or her music preference
④ stick to their own stereotyped style of music

The sharks considered dangerous to man have to be divided into two classes, the
known man-eaters and the reputed man-eaters. The known man-eating species of shark
are few. Of these, the white shark is the most ferocious and dangerous known to man.
Often called by Australians the white pointer, this shark is also known throughout the
rest of the world under a variety of names which include the white death, the great
white shark, the grey shark, the grey death, and the grey pointer. Without a doubt this
is the most terrible monster the seas have produced in recent times. It has been recorded
to be a length of almost 40 feet, with a specimen of 39 feet being captured off the
Hawaiian Islands in the late 1930s, and another estimated at 36 feet in length at Port
Fairy in Victoria. Such an animal must have weighed several tons or more. The white
shark is found in every ocean and sea of the world. It is most prolific in cooler waters,
although still common and often encountered in tropical and semitropical regions.
Since men first took to the sea in ships, the white shark has been known and feared,
instilling terror into the _______________ of sailors. Perhaps the “ghostly” white
appearance of this huge shark has earned it its evil reputation, for there is something
unreal and sinister about the great beast. The white shark has been known to follow
sailing vessels for days, even weeks, gliding silently near the keel or close to the stern,
watching and waiting. It has been recorded in the old sailing days that the hungry
monster has reached out of the ocean to snatch some helpless seaman from the side of
his becalmed ship.

27. According to the passage, which is true?

① Sharks can be classified into three groups based on the degree of danger.
② Australians often call the white shark the great grey shark.
③ White sharks are usually observed in Australia, the Hawaiian Islands, and Canada.
④ The white shark is more commonly found in temperate zones than in hot areas.

28. Which is the most appropriate for the blank?

① silliest ② tallest ③ warmest ④ hardiest

Time Magazine is facing criticism for naming Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk its
“Person of the Year” for 2021, with some lawmakers _______________ out how much the
billionaire has paid in taxes in relation to his overall wealth.

단국대학교 2022학년도 편입생 모집

In a fundraising email on Monday, Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s (D-Wash.) team said, “We
can’t believe Time Magazine just named Elon Musk its ‘Person of the Year,’” adding that
the chief executive is “the richest person in the world and yet he avoids paying his taxes
while working families struggle to put food on the table and pay rent.”
ProPublica released a report in June on the amount in taxes the richest Americans have
paid, including Musk. According to the report, the billionaire paid $68,000 in federal
income taxes in 2015, $65,000 in 2017 and no federal income taxes in 2018.
Musk offered an explanation for his low tax payment that month.
Jayapal’s fundraising email wrote that “the rich have only gotten richer and the wealthy
have watched their profits skyrocket” amid the pandemic, while a number of individuals
have lost their jobs and health care.
The congresswoman’s team said magazines should be applauding frontline heroes and
individuals stumping for equality rather than billionaires like Musk.
“National magazines should be honoring frontline heroes and those working towards a
fairer, more just society. Not a billionaire who paid nothing—not a single penny—in
federal taxes in 2018,” the email reads.

29. Which is the most appropriate for the blank?

① pointing ② point ③ pointed ④ being pointed

30. According to the passage, which is the reason for Rep. Jayapal’s being against Elon
Musk as the “Person of the Year”?
① The rich including him make the frontline heroes and workers even poorer.
② He is not the richest person in the world.
③ Social justice is more important than being wealthy.
④ The rich should donate more.

In August and September, COVID-19 was the leading cause of death for American
ages 35 to 54, and the sixth or seventh leading cause of death for children, according to
recent numbers released by the Kaiser Family Foundation. At one point, the situation
was so dire, the Children’s Hospital Association, which represents 220 hospitals, sent a
letter to the government warning that many hospitals were nearing capacity, experiencing
“unprecedented strain” and pleading for help.
In recent weeks, those numbers─in both children and adults─have begun to wane
significantly, thanks in part to rising (A)natural immunity from those who have already
been infected, new restrictions and growing vaccination levels in the hardest-hit areas.
“One thing we have clearly learned in 2021, which may not have been as clear in
2020, is that pediatric COVID must be taken seriously,” says James Salovic,
pathologist-in-chief at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, which has hospitalized 1,400
children for COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. “I have seen too many children
here walking through our Intensive Care Unit in our emergency centers or on ventilators.
There are serious setbacks for children,” he adds. “I had my 12 year-old vaccinated, but
I also have a child who is under 11. You can bet that as soon as the vaccine has been
given authorization for kids 5 to 11, (B)I’ll be in line with her.”

33. According to the passage, which is the source of the underlined part (A)?
① hospitalization in time
② previous infection
③ large number of vaccinations
④ reinforced restriction

34. Which is the most appropriate inference from the underlined (B)?
① Salovic will be a member of authorities in order to prove drugs’ effects.
② Salovic’s daughter will be vaccinated when the vaccine is available for her.
③ One of Salovic’s children will never be vaccinated due to the lack of clinical data.
④ Salovic will wait for the injection till the vaccine for kids is distributed over the
world.

We humans have unlimited appetites, but we live on a planet with limited resources.
We already use more of Earth’s renewable resources─such as forests, clean air, and
fresh water─than nature can restore each year. And when the rate of consumption of a
resource is greater than the rate at which it is replaced, the resource may become
exhausted.
Today, Earth’s population stands at around seven billion, and it is still growing fast.
By 2050, there may be nine billion people living on the planet. As a result, the
imbalance between what nature replaces and what humans consume will probably
continue to grow. So how will so many more people live on Earth without exhausting
the planet?
The key is sustainability―finding new and efficient ways of conserving resources so
that we do not use them all up. Here are some steps to sustainability from around the
world. First, sustainable cities and towns encourage residents to reduce their impact on
both the local and global environments. Residents in Mbam, Senegal, for example, use
solar ovens to cook food. By using energy from the sun instead of burning wood,
people are saving trees for future generations. Communities in other places are using
improved public transportation systems so that people do not use cars as much. In
Curitiba, Brazil, city buses are frequent, convenient, and efficient, so 70 percent of the
city’s commuters use them. _______________, the city has little traffic congestion and
cleaner air.
Second, as meat consumption grows, the environmental and health effects of producing

meat grow as well. For example, the animal waste that results from raising animals for
food can cause water pollution. In addition, farms that are close to city centers can
increase the risk of dangerous diseases─such as avian flu─spreading. Some governments
are using tax breaks to solve this problem. The government of Thailand placed a high
tax on poultry farms that were within 62 miles (100 kilometers) of its capital city,
Bangkok. _______________, many poultry producers moved away from the city center.
Sustainability is something we are all responsible for and something we all benefit
from. Not only in the long run, by ensuring that we have a healthy, thriving planet, but
also by saving ourselves money.

35. Which is the topic of the passage?

① Some steps to achieve environmental sustainability
② Ways to save energy for future generations
③ Strategies to motivate people to save energy
④ The imbalance between what nature replaces and what humans consume

36. According to the passage, which is NOT true?

① More than half of the people living in Curitiba use city buses.
② The population of earth is still increasing these days.
③ People living in Mbam use solar energy to save trees.
④ Raising animals in a natural environment can decrease air pollution.

37. Which is the most appropriate for the two blanks in common?
① However ② As a result ③ Moreover ④ Alternatively

To live “the good life,” as Rogers see it, is to learn to trust ourselves. As an
individual moves toward openness, he finds that he simultaneously makes progress in his
ability to trust himself and his instincts, and begins to rely more comfortably on his
decision-making capabilities. With no need to repress any part of himself, he has a
greater ability to tune in to all the parts of himself. This gives him access to a variety
of perspectives and feelings, and in turn he is better able to evaluate choices that will
truly realize his potential. He is able to see more clearly what direction his authentic
self wishes to take, and can make choices that are truly in congruence with his needs.
In living “the good life” we also have a sense of owning our lives and taking

- 10 -
단국대학교 2022학년도 편입생 모집

responsibility for ourselves. What we choose to think or do is down to us; there can be
no residual resentments when we have truly identified for ourselves what we want and
need, and taken the steps to create it. At the same time, there is greater accountability
and an increased tendency to truly invest in our lives. It is not uncommon to hear about
a doctor who hates medicine but practices because his parents said that being a doctor
was the way to earn respect and approval—both from them and from society.
_______________, the rates for students who drop out or fail university courses are
strikingly low among those who have received little support but worked to pay for their
tuition.

38. Which does the underlined part imply?

① He rejects the use of medication but does exercise.
② He dislikes medical treatments but recommends alternative medicine.
③ He has little interest in working with patients but does his job.
④ He struggles with studying medicine but trains himself to succeed.

39. Which is the most appropriate for the blank?

① To be more particular ② That is to say
③ As a consequence ④ In contrast

40. According to the passage, which is NOT true?

① Being truly aware of what we want increases our responsibility for ourselves.
② Society or parents can condition our real self to be respected.
③ Realizing our authentic self wishes and striving for them can alleviate our resentment.
④ If our actions are free of external influences, we tend to feel more authentic.
