Course Description: This course introduces students the basic concepts in


phonetics (the scientific study of speech) and in phonology (the study of sound
patterns) with principal emphasis on English language. It provides them with a solid
foundation in both the physical production of his speech sounds phonetics and
extract structure of English sound system phonology. Students will gain an
understanding of the articulatory mechanisms for producing consonants, vowels as
well as stress and intonation. They will be introduced to the international Phonetic
Alphabet and sounds from a variety of languages as well as varieties of English. In
the phonology part of the course, students will analyze the patterns governing the
distribution of sounds and English language.
Course Objectives:
Students will be able to
 To understand the segmental aspects of English and apply the principles of the
description and classification of speech sounds to English consonants and
Vowels.
 To use the symbols of IPA and apply them to the transcription of English Words.
 Understanding the suprasegmental aspects of English, such as English stress,
tone, and intonation pattern and apply these aspects to the transcriptions of
English words, phrases, and sentences.
 To understand the differences between phonetics and phonology and explain
basic phonological concepts.

• Manner of Articulation for Vowel sounds

• Classification of Consonants and Vowel sounds
 Phones, Phonemes, Allophones, Minimal Pairs
• Syllables (Weak and Strong Syllable)
 Prosodic and Suprasegmental Phonology
• Phonological rules (Co-articulation, assimilation, Elision, Liaison)
• Varieties of English Pronunciation
• Teaching of Pronunciation
• Teaching phonetic and phonological elements
