GEAR UP
MELC: Use the appropriate oral language, stance, and behavior when giving information, instructions,
making explanations, and narrating events in factual and personal recounts.
ENGAGE
ORAL LANGUAGE, STANCE, AND BEHAVIOR
STANCE can be defined as the attitude towards the topic of the message. It is how the speaker feels about
the topic. The stance a speaker takes will greatly determine the tone of the message and the choice of words.
To determine the stance, you need to listen and combine three things - 1) the meaning of the words, 2) the
context in which they are spoken, and 3) the way they are spoken.
Language allows people to communicate in a manner that enables the sharing of common ideas. ORAL
LANGUAGE is designed to be listened to and to sound conversational, which means that word choice must
be simpler, more informal, and more repetitive. On the other hand, written language uses a larger vocabulary
and is more formal. One of the first concepts a speaker needs to think about when looking at language use is
appropriateness. By appropriate, it means the following:
a. Appropriate for the Speaker – The language fits with your own speaking pattern. For example, if you
are a Grade 7 student, use words that you are familiar with. Do not use difficult and deep words that
would make you sound smart but difficult for you or the audience to understand the nuances of meaning.
b. Appropriate for the Audience – The language should be understood by the people listening to you.
For example, if you will present a report to your classmates, then use words that you know your
classmates will understand.
c. Appropriate for the Context – The language should be suitable to the occasion, the time of day, the
mood of the audience, and other factors in addition to the physical location where you are speaking. For
example, the language you will use when speaking to a group of friends will be different when you are
speaking to a teacher or an adult.
d. Appropriate for the Topic – The language should be relevant to what is being talked about. For
example, if you are talking about science, it is common to use words like variables or vertebrates. But if
you use those words when you are talking about Philippine history, it will seem out of place.
BEHAVIOR is the way in which you conduct yourself when speaking. When you give information, instructions,
explanations, or narrate events, remember the following:
1. Maintain good eye contact.
2. Match what you are saying with appropriate facial expression, tone of voice and body position /
posture.
3. Use suitable gestures – hand and arm movements – to reinforce what you are saying.
4. Avoid filler words or non-words like um, er, like, y’know, okay, right, basically, and well.
Using the appropriate oral language, stance, and behavior when giving information, instructions, making
explanations, and narrating events in factual and personal recounts will help you deliver your message more
accurately and avoid misinterpretations. When you are able to combine the correct oral language, stance, and
behavior every time you speak, your messages will come across clearly and will easily be understood by the
listener.
