the added property which is not possessed by signs, of being able to convey a con-
tinuing message to a moving driver.

By channelling traffic into lanes, for example, in busy built-up areas and at motorway
junctions, road markings can improve traffic flow and also contribute significantly to
driver safety and comfort.

However, it is important also to bear in mind the limitations of road markings. They
may be obliterated by sand or dust, their conspicuity is reduced considerably when
wet, they are prone to collect oily dirt from passing vehicles and their durability de-
pends not only on the materials used in their formation but on their exposure to traf-
fic wear. In a dusty/sandy environment abrasion by traffic can be quite rapid and se-
vere.

It is strongly recommended that road markings be considered and planned in detail

at the design stage of new roads or improved junctions.

There are two main classes of road markings. Longitudinal markings divide the car-
riageway into lanes, warn of the approach to hazards, delineate the edges of the
carriageway and, when applied in a double line system to the center of a two-way
road, control overtaking where visibility is restricted. Transverse markings indicate
the positions on the carriageway where drivers should STOP or GIVE WAY to traffic,
for example, when entering a major road or roundabout.

There are 3 types of paint for road markings; cold paint, double component paint
and thermoplastic paint. These are used to marking of car park lines with cold paint;
offset hatch, pedestrian walkways, warning lines, text, standard arrow and standard
double arrow with double component paint; lanes with thermoplastic paint.

3.2 COLOR

The European Agreement supplementing the Convention on Road Signs and Sig-
nals and The Protocol on Road Markings, additional to that Agreement, which was
opened for signature at Geneva on 1st March 1973 made provisions as follows:

grey.

However:

Markings showing places where parking is permitted or restricted may be blue; zig-
zag lines showing places where parking is prohibited shall be yellow.

The line which lies on pavement shall be contrast with pavement at day time and
shall be easily visible under headlights at nights.

3.3 LINE TYPES

3.3.1 Edge Lines

At motorways the edge lines applied with 0.25m thickness. Edge lines follow geomet-

a-

tions and at entrances and exits of roadside service and park areas. At separations

and joinings during the connection widths of the edge lines do not change. (Figure

3-1)

3.3.2 Lane Lines

At motorways lane lines shall be applied as broken lines with 6m marks and 9m
gaps which have got 0.15 m thickness.

The lane lines shall be applied without any diversion. But at curved sections accord-
ing to curve center the outer lane lines shall be extended due to difference of radi-
uses. (Figure 3-2)

If joining and separation arms are multi-lane, lane lines start when the standard lane
width has been reached.

3.3.3 Separation Lines

Separation lines shall be drawn continuously from start point of transition, to the
point which total width of edge line and separation line became 0.5 m. And then it
shall be continued broken with 3.00 m gaps and 3.00 m (Figure 3-3)

3.3.4 Offset Stripes

All prohibited areas shall be designated with offset stripes.

The sharp edges of prohibited area offset stripes follow a soft parabolic curve be-
tween physical nose and geometric nose.

Stripes shall have slopes of 2:1(Figure 3-4)

3.3.7 Lane Arrows and Lane Destinations

3.3.7.1 Lane Destinations

3.3.7.2 Deflection Arrow

This arrow is used in separation lanes.

3.3.7.3 Bifurcation Arrow

This arrow is used before separation lanes.

Deflection and bifurcation arrows can be

used symmetrically.

These arrows are appeared green in project.

But these arrows are white in application.

3.3.8 Road Markings with Studs

When reflective road studs used it shall be applied minimum 250 m before separa-
tion transition and shall be continued to the point where acceleration lane unit with
main body. White studs shall be applied at lane lines, edge lines and separation
lines.

Reflective road studs shall be applied between lane line marks in every 15 m on
main body. During the edge lines of main body and edge lines of the separation arm
they shall be applied 5 cm out of these lines until physical nose alignment. After
physical nose, they should be used in every 30 m.

At separation lines, road studs shall be applied in every 30 m between Marks until
the continuous separation line start. At continuous separation line start and on con-
tinuous separation line studs shall be applied in every 15 m and finally at space be-
tween edge line and offset stripes on prohibited areas, studs shall be applied in eve-
ry 15 m.
