CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the introduction of the study and its problem. It includes significant

variables that are used in the study as well as the significance and limitations.

A.BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Choosing the right senior high school strand is a critical decision that students have to

make, as it can have a significant impact on their future career path. However, the decision

making process can be complex, and students may face several challenges in making an

informed decision.

In the Philippines, K-12 education system was implemented in 2013, which added

two additional years of senior high school to the previous 10-year basic education cycle,

senior high school consist of four different strands: Academic, Technical-Vocational-

Livelihood, Sports, and Arts and Design. Each strand offers a different set of subjects skills

training that aims to prepare students for their chosen career paths.

The K to 12 curriculum gives students time to master basic academic skills. Prior to

the implementation of the K-12 curriculum guide the Philippines was one of the only three

countries in the world and the only one in Asia that still had only 10 years in basic education.

This has always been seen as a disadvantage for our students who are competing in an

increasingly global job market. The longer educational cycle of the K-12 curriculum is seen

as critical in giving Filipino students a higher quality education.
