Technical Information to all Owners / Operators (Supersedes Bulletin
of Sulzer RTA Engines RTA-67.1 of 21.01.2005)

1. Introduction 1
Following the stress calculation of all cylinder liner lifting device components, design
modifications were carried out to fulfil today’s safety requirements.
Note: The retrofit of the lifting device and its components is mandatory due to
existing safety requirements.
In order to ensure full compliance with today’s safety requirements the
following must be observed:
the described handling of the cylinder liner lifting tool is to be strictly followed and
implemented immediately.
the retrofit package must be applied without delay.
Generally for all engines, the suspension bracket (94202, see Fig. 1+2) requires a
modification which can be carried out by the ship’s crew. An instruction is included in
this Service Bulletin.
The other parts of the lifting device need replacing, depending on the engine type.
NOTE: The distance piece (TO 94202) will also be supplied and should be stored
for the time being. Maybe at a later stage the engine is equipped with an
APR and then the distance piece will be needed.

2mm ±0.5 per side
The four screws to the suspension straps (see Fig.2) must be hand tightened only
(approx. 30 Nm)
Note: Screw length inside the thread after hand tightening to be a minimum of
1.2 x thread diameter.
The two special screws (94207) must be hand tightened only (approx. 30 Nm)
before evenly tightening the bolts. If the two special screws (94207) are correct
tightened, there will be no clearance between contact surface of the special
screws and the cylinder liner.
Please ensure that all vessels in your fleet having RTA type engines are provided
with the revised Maintenance Manual pages (for inserting into the existing Manuals
on board).

6. SERVICE BULLETINS PUBLISHED FOR LARGE
BORE RTA-TYPE ENGINES
We have so far published the following Service Bulletins which are valid for Large Bore RTA-Type
Engines (RTA48T to RTA96C):
Should you not be in possession of the above mentioned documentation suitable for your plant, kindly
contact your local Wärtsilä representative for your copy.
Î see the respective pages in your Maintenance Manual, section 2124 (older
manuals section 214).
Four suspension straps 94208 are fitted for removing and fitting the antipolishing ring as
shown in Fig. `G`. The latter can be lifted with the aid of wire ropes which are attached to
the suspension straps and connected to the crane.
Before fitting, clean the seating surface on the antipolishing ring as well as the cylinder
liner, and smear the antipolishing ring lightly with oil. Further, pay attention that one of the
holes for fastening the suspension straps lies on the fuel side.
