Chapter 1: Introduction

As Internet technologies have matured new software tools and

improved network infrastructure have enabled academic institutions to develop
innovative approaches to enhance collaborative learning through the use of
online collaborative software tools (Roberts, 2003). The widespread
availability of collaborative software tools (such as email, instant messaging
and shared online storage) has facilitated the trend toward supplementing
traditional face-to-face group collaboration with computer assisted
collaborative methods (Conrad, 2005).

However, there are a number of factors that can either facilitate or

impede the successful completion of an online group project (An & Kim, 2016). <--
One such factor is the lack of sufficient exposure and training on the use of the
collaborative software that facilitates online group collaboration which can
potentially present an impediment to the learner (Wright, 2015; An & Kim,
2016). Group dynamics is also one of factors that contributes strongly towards
the overall success or failure of an online group project. For example,
Johnson and Johnson (2004) argue that positive interdependence, which is
the heart of effective collaboration, transpires when each member in a group
perceives that he or she cannot succeed unless the group does.

This study examines some of the difficulties faced by learners when

their collaborations are mediated through computer technology and
subsequently explores methods available to enhance the learners’ group-
based collaborations. With the aim of developing a toolkit that can enhance
group-based collaboration for online learners, existing research is considered
for designing a web-based collaborative working environment. The students’
perspective is also considered, and in this regard a study was conducted at
the College of Computing Technology in Dublin, Ireland where surveys were
used to gain insight regarding the collaborative tools and methods used by
students at the college working in groups to complete their Bachelor’s Degree
projects.
