love of justice will be least likely to sacrifice it to temporary or partial considerations. And what are
the different classes of legislators but advocates and parties to the causes which they determine. The
two great points of difference between a democracy and a republic are: first, the delegation of the
government, in the latter, to a small number of citizens elected by the rest; secondly, the greater
number of citizens, and greater sphere of country, over which the latter may be extended. Those
elected wouldn’t represent the common man but would have men of the most elevated ranks chosen.
Does one person come up with an idea, and the other add to it. These must be chiefly, if not wholly,
effects of the unsteadiness and injustice with which a factious spirit has tainted our public
administrations. Does it, in fine, consist in the greater obstacles opposed to the concert and
accomplishment of the secret wishes of an unjust and interested majority. In a small republic, it
would also be easier for the candidates to fool the voters but more difficult in a large one.
