Weight
• Brake weight reduced 30 lbs.
• Spacer bars deleted for an additional
reduction of 8 lbs.
• Installed weight will be ~15 pounds less
than competitor (75 Vs 90 lbs....)

Model 790 Design Features
• Two housings per engine
– Each housing covers 3 cylinders
– Front and rear housings are NOT interchangeable
• Ductile iron replaces compacted graphite
• Individual slave pistons and lash adjusting
screws
• 7 Point hold down system
– Flats on rocker shaft replace rocker shaft saddles
– Longer end studs hold down brake and rocker shaft

Benefits
• Retarding power 405+ HP @ 2100 rpm
• 450+ HP@ 2100 rpm w/ closed
wastegate
• Fewer housings to handle during
assembly
– Two Vs three
• No more spacer bars

Injector Rocker Arm
• Will not require the “brake” precision ground roller
• Will not require the pin to hold roller
• Will not require the assembly of the pin and roller
• New injector rocker geometry will be a drill point, no
added assembly required to the arm
• Additional $$$ savings to DDC

Rev 3/2/00

Reliability
• Improvements
– Removal of torsion spring
– Removal of bridge
– Potential deletion of lash device
– No accumulator

Retarding Modulation
• Brake will have the same modulation levels as
today
• Front and rear housings with one solenoid on one
and two solenoids on the other
• The three cylinder brake design allows future option
of six cylinder modulation for cruise control

Rev 3/2/00
25ST0060-2
Retarding Modulation

• Cylinder compression release sequence is new -

sounds are different
– 4 cylinder mid-range
» Old sequence was 1, 5, 6, 2
» New sequence is 5, 3, 6, 4
– 2 Cylinder low-range
» Old sequence was 3, 4
» New sequence is 1, 2

Casting Material
• Current production uses compacted graphite
– Chosen as cost savings (Armoloy bore)
– Difficult to machine
– Heavy
• Flat brake will use Ductile iron casting
– Wear handled with articulating Master Piston
– Better machinability
– Higher quality
– Better appearance, Lighter
